The position is located within the subject of systems biology, which at the University of Skövde is defined as the development and application of computer-based, mathematical, and statistical methods and models, as well as the generation of large-scale data for the study of biological systems. Systems biology is also the name of the department's research environment, which brings together research on biological systems and creates conditions for interdisciplinary collaboration between research groups with complementary competencies.

Your Role

The position of Assistant Professor is a tenure-track appointment aimed at promotion to a permanent position as Professor. The Assistant Professor is given the opportunity to develop an independent research profile and gain merit both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the qualification requirements for a Professor position.

The appointment is fixed-term for four years and is full-time. An individually adapted development plan is established to support the Assistant Professor's tenure process. During the appointment, the Assistant Professor may apply for promotion to Professor when the qualification requirements are met. Upon approved promotion, the appointment becomes permanent.

The goal of the appointment is for you to establish an independent research profile in AI-driven precision medicine with a foundation in systems biology. You are expected to contribute to the long-term development of the department's research in this area by developing national and international collaborations and designing competitive applications for external research funding. The appointment also includes teaching and supervision within the department's educational programs, particularly in bioinformatics and systems biology at the advanced level.

The main tasks within the appointment are:

  • Conduct and develop research in AI-driven precision medicine.
  • Initiate and develop national and international research collaborations and actively seek external research funding.
  • Collaborate with the surrounding society as well as with academic, clinical, and industrial actors.
  • Teaching, supervision, and examination at undergraduate and advanced levels.
  • Administration.

Additional tasks may be included in the appointment.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A completed PhD in systems biology, biomedicine, biosciences, or a related field, or equivalent scientific competence. Preference is given to those who have completed their PhD or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years before the application deadline. (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 4a)
  • Documented scientific proficiency in systems biology with a focus on biological or biomedical questions.
  • Documented experience in the development and application of methods in AI/machine learning and statistical modeling for the analysis of biological and medical data.
  • Documented ability to communicate and present scientific research results in English, both orally and in scientific publications.
  • Documented good teamwork skills and the ability to contribute to and develop research collaborations.

We will also evaluate the following criteria during the hiring process:

Of highest importance are:

  • The degree of proficiency required for qualification.
  • Documented ability to independently conduct research and publish scientific results.
  • Ability and potential to develop competitive applications for external research funding.
  • Documented experience in establishing and developing national and international research collaborations and networks.

Of next highest importance are:

  • Documented programming competence in Python and R for advanced analysis and integration of large-scale biological and medical data.
  • Knowledge of network and multi-omics data analysis, including bulk and single-cell RNA-seq analysis, as well as experience with applications in precision medicine and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP).
  • Documented experience with established AI/machine learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or equivalent, as well as practical experience in developing and applying advanced AI models on high-performance computing infrastructure, including GPU-based systems.

Also of importance are:

  • Demonstrated pedagogical proficiency.

Employment Type: Fixed-term for four years. An Assistant Professor has the right during the appointment to apply for promotion to Professor upon meeting the qualifications. Upon approved promotion, the appointment becomes permanent.
