Stockholm University of the Arts (SKH) educates and conducts research in circus, dance, film and media, opera, and theatre.

Do you want to contribute to an attractive study, research, and work environment? Here, you will become an important part of an environment where artistic education and research create the conditions for art as a dynamic, challenging, and unbound force in society. Together, we work for a culture that is generous and characterized by co-creation, trust, engagement, and responsibility.

Apply for the position of Costume Technician

We are looking for a Costume Technician for the Technology and Production Department. The department's main task is to provide production technical support and planning for student productions within acting, film, performing arts, dance, dance pedagogy, circus, and opera. We are a team of 21 people with very broad competence in a number of different areas such as stage technology, sound and lighting technology, post-production, video and exhibition technology, software, costumes, circus rigging, and everything else involved in the technical execution of the art forms.

Responsibilities

Together with your colleagues in the department, you will be responsible for the costume and prop work in student productions. The work includes planning and coordinating costumes and props throughout the entire production process, including sewing, cutting, costume work, maintenance of the costume and prop storage, and prop care.

The role also involves supporting and supervising students in their work with costumes and props, as well as participating in teaching activities within the area of operations. You will have many points of contact, both internally with students and staff and externally with suppliers, other educational institutions, and cultural institutions. Since SKH is an international educational institution, the work takes place in a multilingual environment, which means you need to be able to communicate fluently in both Swedish and English, both orally and in writing.

Depending on your competence and interests, the role may also include technical planning of courses together with teachers, as well as the development of digital tools for the design and construction of costumes and props. You are expected to contribute to planning, coordinating, and driving the work within your area of responsibility independently.

Qualifications

  • Good sewing skills
  • Extensive experience working with productions in theatre or film
  • Pedagogical experience as a teacher or instructor
  • Good experience in coordinating, leading, and independently driving projects
  • A few years of practical experience working with sewing and prop care
  • Experience working as a costume designer
  • Knowledge of and experience with workflows related to stage and film production
  • Good ability to communicate in Swedish and English, both orally and in writing

Merits:

  • Stage technology or artistic university education or equivalent competence acquired through practical work at a theatre, stage, or university
  • Knowledge and experience in manufacturing and/or ordering props
  • Skills in pattern cutting
  • Experience working with digital tools for the design and construction of costumes and props

To thrive, you must be self-reliant, responsible, and solution-oriented. You collaborate easily and have an understanding of a holistic perspective. You should be calm, confident, and stress-resistant in your professional role. Initiative is necessary as the educational areas of the institutions are constantly changing, and new tasks are developed in tandem with the education. Therefore, it is of great importance that you are open and interested in developing new working methods and tools for artistic production. The tasks largely stem from a learning and supporting role towards the operations and the artistic projects being produced. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
