At the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), we are in an exciting growth phase and are looking for engaged colleagues within structural integrity, I&C, aging, maintenance, as well as a generalist. We believe in combining fresh academic knowledge with extensive experience. Therefore, we are looking for both junior candidates and those with a more senior profile who wish to take the next step in their career. 

Possible locations are Solna, Katrineholm, or Gothenburg.

About the role

As an inspector at the unit Supervision of Incident Follow-up and Technology, you will play a key role in supervising that nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities are operated in a safe and compliant manner.

We offer you a position where you are responsible for supervision within your area of expertise and work closely with colleagues, both within and across departmental and unit boundaries. You contribute your expertise throughout the entire chain, from review and analysis to the development of supervision activities within your technical field. Together with engaged colleagues, you drive important issues forward and contribute to continuous improvement and knowledge development.

The work involves, among other things,

  • reviewing documentation and assessing facility changes by the operator
  • conducting supervision activities at the operator's facilities 
  • participating in and contributing to regulatory work and licensing reviews, including for new nuclear power
  • monitoring and analyzing developments in your field
  • participating in networks, conferences, and in some cases international cooperation, as needed.

About you

We are looking for someone who has

  • an engineering degree or equivalent work experience in the relevant area that the Authority considers relevant for the position
  • good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written
  • good knowledge of English.

If you are applying for the position within structural integrity, you also have

  • good knowledge of aging and degradation mechanisms of mechanical components and material properties
  • good knowledge of strength analyses for mechanical components.

If you are applying for the position within I&C (Instrumentation and Control), you also have

  • knowledge of the design of programmable and relay-based instrumentation and control systems in nuclear facilities
  • knowledge of the function and structure of protection systems.

If you are applying for the position within aging, you also have

  • knowledge of aging management programs and chemical programs for nuclear facilities
  • knowledge of degradation mechanisms of polymers.

If you are applying for the position within maintenance, you also have

  • knowledge of maintenance programs, methods, and strategies within nuclear operations or other activities with high safety or availability requirements

If you are applying for the position as a generalist, you also have

  • experience with reactor safety issues
  • good knowledge of nuclear reactors and the structure of defense-in-depth, the structure of safety functions, and the design of SARs (Safety Analysis Reports).

The following is considered meritorious if you have knowledge or work experience in:

  • experience working within a government authority
  • conducting inspections and interviews
  • coordinating and leading projects
  • knowledge of the defense-in-depth principle

For the position within structural integrity, the following is also considered meritorious 

  • experience working with pressure- and load-bearing mechanical components in operations requiring high safety
  • experience in investigation or review work within strength and materials
  • experience in damage investigations
  • knowledge of materials used in nuclear reactors and the effect of radiation on materials
  • knowledge of inspection and testing of mechanical devices
  • knowledge of concrete structures

For the position within I&C, the following is also considered meritorious

  • experience with modernization of reactor protection systems
  • experience with digitalization of older analog systems
  • experience with operation and maintenance of programmable and relay-based instrumentation and control systems in operations with high safety requirements
  • knowledge of qualification, including environmental qualification of electrical components

For the position within aging, the following is also considered meritorious

  • knowledge of maintenance programs, methods, or strategies within nuclear operations or other activities with high safety or availability requirements
  • knowledge of IAEA's IGALL program

For the position within maintenance, the following is also considered meritorious

  • experience from maintenance work at a nuclear facility
  • knowledge of aging management programs for nuclear facilities
  • knowledge of chemical programs for nuclear facilities

For the position as a generalist, the following is also considered meritorious

  • knowledge of nuclear power plant safety analyses
  • experience from incident investigations at a nuclear power plant

About the employment

The employment is permanent with a start date as agreed. The employment may begin with a six-month probationary period. Travel for work purposes occurs.

A certificate of fitness for work with ionizing radiation is required for the position. Consideration will be given to any conflict of interest rules and cooling-off periods. An employment with us may involve placement in a security classification. A security clearance with register check according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585) may therefore be conducted before a decision on employment. Swedish citizenship is required for some of our security-classified tasks.
