The Department of Swedish and Multilingualism is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University, with approximately 140 employees and over 5,000 students per academic year.

The Centre for Research on Bilingualism is part of the Department of Swedish and Multilingualism and provides a broad base for theoretical and practical research aimed at increasing understanding and knowledge of bilingualism and multilingualism. The Centre is a cross-linguistic and interdisciplinary unit within the linguistics section of the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. The Centre's research covers psycholinguistic, education-related, language-structural, sociolinguistic, interactional, and neurocognitive aspects of bilingualism and multilingualism.

Job Responsibilities

The work will be conducted within the framework of a research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (ref. 10.005.589) during 2026–2030. A summary of the project can be found here: The grammar-body interface in second language interaction: a developmental perspective.

As a Research Assistant, you will primarily assist project members with various tasks related to data collection and processing, such as recruiting participants, video recording speakers of Swedish as a second language, administering collected audio and video material, transcribing recorded interactions, and reviewing transcriptions. Some video editing may also be included.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who are educated in linguistics, multilingualism, or second language acquisition, preferably at an advanced level within higher education or university, or alternatively have a corresponding degree that the employer deems relevant for the position.

You have an interest in social interaction and second language acquisition, and possess very good skills in Swedish and English, both spoken and written. Furthermore, you are organized, solution-oriented, and have good collaboration skills.

Experience working with audio and video recordings as well as transcribing conversations is meritorious. Experience with conversation analysis and its transcription principles is particularly valuable, as is familiarity with software for playing back and transcribing audio and video files. Basic knowledge of French is meritorious.

About the Position

The position is for a Research Assistant at 40% of full-time employment, fixed-term for one year. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date 1 September 2026 or by agreement.
