The Faculty of Technology and Health has education and research within technology, health, and information design with a clear starting point in societal challenges. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with external actors, nationally and internationally, and contributes to knowledge development and innovation. Through our collaboration platforms, we bring together academia, the public sector, and business to jointly drive knowledge development and strengthen the relevance of research and education. Education at all levels is research-based and has a clear connection to the needs of society and working life. Together, we contribute to sustainable societal development. Within the faculty, there are three departments where a total of approximately 500 people work.
The Department of Technology Science brings together much of the university's higher education and civil engineering programs within energy technology, mechanical engineering, robotics, building technology, environmental technology, and industrial systems. Internationally recognized research is conducted here with a focus on future energy and industrial systems. Collaboration with industry and society is at the center to develop sustainable, resource-efficient, and competitive solutions for tomorrow's society.

Admission to the doctoral program is regulated by the university's admission regulations, which consolidate national and local rules applicable for access to postgraduate education at Mälardalen University. The study place is combined with a full-time employment as a doctoral student during the period of study, which corresponds to four years.
Job Responsibilities
The research education is conducted within the subject of energy and environmental engineering with a specialization in power engineering, linked to MDU's existing research areas. The employment also includes departmental duties equivalent to a maximum of 20 percent of working time. The tasks may include teaching in the form of calculation exercises, laboratory supervision, and supervision of project work.
The doctoral project focuses on the development of future sustainable and resilient power systems, with a particular focus on:
- flexibility and resilience in power systems,
- integration of energy storage and renewable electricity generation into power systems,
- power electronics related to the integration of batteries and variable electricity generation,
- power quality challenges linked to increased electrification.
Qualification Requirements
To be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have basic eligibility and the specific eligibility required by the subject, as well as be assessed to have such other abilities as are needed to benefit from the education.
Basic Eligibility for postgraduate education (according to Higher Education Act Chapter 7, Section 39) is held by those who:
- have completed an advanced level degree,
- have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
- in some other way, within or outside the country, have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
Specific Eligibility
Specific eligibility for admission is held by those who have a Master of Science in Engineering or a Master's degree in electrical engineering, technical physics, energy systems, or equivalent.
Selection Criteria
Selection among applicants who have basic and specific eligibility shall be made with regard to their ability to benefit from the education (Higher Education Act Chapter 7, Section 41).
In addition, selection among eligible applicants will be made according to the following assessment criteria: Good skills in writing and communicating in English.
It is also meritorious to have:
- good skills in writing and communicating in Swedish,
- good knowledge within power engineering, power electronics, and power system analysis,
- experience in modeling, simulation, and experimental activities.
In a combined assessment of suitability, personal abilities are also given weight. All employees at MDU are expected to collaborate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the operations and their own work tasks, and contribute to a good work environment.
