The Department of Ecology, Environment and Botany (DEEP) conducts research and education at the Arrhenius Laboratories on the Frescati campus. We have approximately 100 staff members, including PhD students and postdocs, distributed across 25 research groups.

Project Description

The postdoc will work within a project aimed at understanding how evolutionary processes are affected by the unique life cycles, clonal growth, and spatial organization of fungi. The project focuses particularly on how somatic mutations arising during vegetative growth can spread within mycelium and influence selection, adaptation, and genetic conflicts, as well as how different reproductive strategies may limit or amplify such effects. The work is theoretical and will primarily consist of developing and analyzing mathematical models, evolutionary invasion analysis/adaptive dynamics, and numerical simulations.

The postdoc will join a group of researchers and PhD students led by Professor Hanna Johannesson. The research group is international, and the position offers significant opportunities for scientific exchange with mycologists, genomicists, evolutionary biologists, and ecologists.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a postdoc, a completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree is required. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is meritorious if the doctoral degree or equivalent was completed no more than three years before the last day of application. If there are special reasons, a previously completed degree may also be considered meritorious. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust positions within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment, particular weight will be placed on scientific proficiency in theoretical evolutionary biology. Documented experience in mathematical modeling and analysis of evolutionary models, particularly using evolutionary invasion analysis/adaptive dynamics and numerical simulations, is a requirement. Experience in life-history evolution, genetic variation, or fungal life cycles is meritorious.

The postdoc needs to be able to work well in a group as well as independently. Desirable personal qualities include initiative, analytical ability, and drive. Excellent knowledge of English (the group's working language) is of great importance.

About the Position

The position is full-time and permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date 2026-09-01 or as agreed.
