Job Description

SciLifeLab and the Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative focusing on data-driven research. The aim is to train and recruit the next generation of life scientists and to create strong, globally competitive competence in computational science and computer science for Swedish life sciences. The programme aims to strengthen national collaborations between universities, bridge research environments within life and data sciences, and create partnerships with industry, healthcare, and other national and international actors.

We are now looking for a Data Science Lead for SciLifeLab’s bioinformatics platform (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden: www.nbis.se (http://www.nbis.se)) to contribute to shaping and accelerating the adoption of advanced machine learning and AI in data-driven life science research. At SciLifeLab’s bioinformatics platform (NBIS), a unique national infrastructure with over 120 experts, you will play a key role in strategic and practical planning together with SciLifeLab’s AI Lead and other national and international partners. Part of your time will also involve contributing to selected research projects, providing guidance on advanced analytical and AI-driven methods, and participating in doctoral education at the national level.

The main responsibilities include:

  • Strategic and practical planning to shape and accelerate the adoption of advanced machine learning and AI in data-driven life science research, in close collaboration with key national and international partners.
  • Participate in scientific guidance and training of senior bioinformatics staff within support services.
  • Conduct advanced data analysis and provide guidance in nationally prioritized data-driven research projects within life sciences.
  • Participate in advanced national doctoral courses and educational initiatives.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

  • a PhD or equivalent work experience in image analysis, bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • extensive experience (5+ years) in applying and/or developing advanced methods in machine learning and AI in internationally competitive life science research.
  • excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • strong collaborative and communication skills.

Additional qualifications

Relevant postdoctoral experience or equivalent industry experience is a strong merit but not a requirement. Programming skills in Python and experience with data science tools such as Numpy, Pandas, or Matplotlib are desirable, as is experience using modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow, or advanced use of LLMs. "Reproducible research" and "FAIR data" are central concepts for us, and we value experience in developing reproducible code through code-sharing platforms, version control, workflow languages, and container solutions. Documented ability to responsibly and legally apply machine learning and AI methods to sensitive personal data is desirable, as is experience in validating and interpreting AI models.

About the Position

This is a permanent full-time position with a six-month probation period. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date by agreement.
