Role Summary:

This role is part of TRATON Group R&D, located in Södertälje, Sweden.

The Valve Train group (TGRPCEV) is responsible for developing engine valve train systems within Conventional Engine Development. The team currently consists of seven design engineers, four test engineers, and one Scrum Master, all based at the Scania Technical Centre in Södertälje.

As a Design Engineer, you will be part of Conventional Engine Development and work within a broad network across TRATON Group R&D as well as with our brands. You will contribute to cross-functional collaboration and play an active role in the development of robust and high-performing engine components.

Within TRATON Group R&D, the Engine Dynamics section is responsible for the design and validation of hardware components for durable, high-performance internal combustion engines used across several TRATON brands. Our ambition is clear: to develop future-proof ICE solutions that deliver strong customer value while reducing environmental impact.

We are strengthening our Valve Train design team and are looking for an experienced Development Engineer with a solid background in mechanical design. In this role, you will contribute early and confidently in ongoing projects, working close to the core of our products and playing a key role in shaping next-generation ICE technology within TRATON.

You will join a collaborative, supportive, friendly, and trust-based environment where teamwork is key, and where we actively leverage the diverse skills and experiences within the group.

Job Responsibilities:

As a Design Engineer within Engine Dynamics, you will work hands-on with component ownership, design, cross-functional collaboration, and documentation. You will follow your components from early concept to final release and ensure that designs meet functional, quality, and performance targets across TRATON brands.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing engine valve train components using CATIA and TRATON/Scania design guidelines.
  • Preparing drawings and documentation according to requirements.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally with simulation, testing, production engineering, and other design groups.
  • Defining, coordinating, and following up on simulation and testing activities.
  • Managing design administration, handling reviews and feedback loops from several global stakeholders.
  • Ensuring components meet delivery timelines throughout the development flow.
  • Contributing to continuous improvements in tools, methods, and processes.

This role offers both technical depth and broad cross-functional exposure, with real influence on customer value across the TRATON portfolio.

Who You Are:

To be successful in this role, you bring a mix of technical expertise, structure, coordination skills, and the ability to navigate complex design flows.

Knowledge & Skills

  • 2–3+ years of experience as a mechanical design engineer, preferably within engines, powertrain, or similarly complex mechanical systems.
  • Solid experience working in CATIA (must-have).
  • Experience from component ownership or design releases, including both technical and administrative responsibility.
  • Relevant academic technical degree (Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Good communication skills in English (team working language).
  • Experience in valve train systems or engine development is a plus.

Personal Qualities

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholders.
  • Structured and organized, able to manage parallel design loops effectively.
  • Proactive mindset with a drive to move work forward.
  • Resilience and patience to handle long feedback cycles.
  • Ability to ensure decisions are followed through and implemented.

This is Us:

The Valve Train team is at the forefront of development, as we have responsibility for the cam phasers, which is the primary concept to fulfill future engine emission levels and engine brake performance.

We offer a stimulating work environment with a wide variety of responsibilities and strong cross-functional collaboration. In close teamwork with committed colleagues, you will gain deep competence in the components used across TRATON Group. The complexity and broad scope of our work create excellent opportunities for skill development, and you will see how your designs are used in real customer applications.

We help each other solve challenges, share knowledge openly, and work together toward common goals. We value curiosity, continuous learning, and making full use of each person’s experience — creating a workplace where development happens naturally, and where it is enjoyable to contribute.

Within TRATON Group R&D, you are an important part of something bigger. Joining us means gaining access to the ins and outs of the entire transportation industry.

TRATON Offers:

We offer a dynamic, flexible workplace with hybrid work options, including Scania Sergel and Midway hubs. With a structured development plan and courses, TRATON Group R&D supports your career growth both locally and internationally.

Benefits include wellness allowance, bonus, flexible hours, and company car leasing. We also host events for employees and their families, and Stockholm residents enjoy direct access to Södertälje via Scania Job Express buses for an easy commute to Södertälje.
