Do you want to make a difference for patients with cancer and hereditary diseases?
We are looking for a Research Engineer at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, Rudbeck Laboratory, with the task of developing methods and analyzing samples using advanced molecular genetic techniques within Clinical Genomics Uppsala, Science for Life Laboratory. The position is permanent.
The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. A central idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the operations are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments for a number of degree programs, standalone courses, and international master's programs within the Faculty of Medicine. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is approximately 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. Clinical Genomics Uppsala has been part of the Clinical Genomics platform within Science for Life Laboratory since its inception in 2013. The bioinformatics operations are located at Uppsala University, while laboratory work is performed at clinical laboratories at Uppsala University Hospital. The unit's mission is to provide service and development for clinic-oriented research, as well as to develop and provide clinical tests, primarily using large-scale DNA sequencing, so-called next-generation sequencing (NGS). In multidisciplinary teams with bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, and physicians, the facility delivers clinical assessments of discovered genetic variants. The operations are primarily focused on hereditary diseases, various forms of cancer, and microbiology. Currently, over 10,000 human clinical samples are analyzed per year using the methods provided by the facility. Since genetic diagnostics are requested in an increasing number of clinical disciplines, the prognosis points to strong growth.
Job Responsibilities
The facility is looking for a full-time Research Engineer to analyze samples using advanced molecular genetic methods. The position also involves some development and method optimization. The work will largely focus on analyses within cancer and hereditary diseases using NGS (short-read and long-read), where we, among other things, drive projects for the introduction of diagnostic whole-genome and transcriptome analyses. In addition to NGS, other methods such as digital PCR and single-cell techniques will also be included. The position includes experimental design, laboratory work, and reporting of assignments. Participation in quality work, project coordination, education, and development of operations is also part of the job responsibilities.
The employees will work together with biomedical analysts, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, hospital geneticists, and physicians within our facility, as well as in national and international collaborations.
Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent with a biomedical focus, such as molecular biologist, BMA (Biomedical Analyst), biomedicine graduate, or biotechnologist.
- Extensive experience with molecular biological methods.
- Experience with next-generation sequencing, including long-read sequencing, and digital droplet PCR.
- Experience in evaluating and optimizing molecular methods.
- Experience working in an accredited clinical laboratory environment.
- Since documentation for Uppsala University Hospital is done in Swedish, the position requires good ability to express oneself in Swedish, both orally and in writing.
The work places high demands on accuracy, organizational skills, initiative, teamwork, and independence, so great importance will be attached to personal suitability.
Merits
A PhD in molecular biology/biomedicine/biotechnology or a corresponding field is meritorious. Previous work within cancer is desirable. The position requires a good ability to express oneself in English, both orally and in writing. You will be part of a team with many involved parties, which places high demands on the ability to collaborate and be flexible.
