The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. A key principle of the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the operations are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching responsibilities for several degree programs, standalone courses, and international master's programs within the Faculty of Medicine. The department has an annual turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is approximately 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are over 850 active personnel in total. Job Description

The role of Research Engineer involves the analysis of clinical and research samples using advanced molecular genetic methods, with a particular focus on long-read sequencing such as Oxford Nanopore and/or PacBio, in combination with short-read NGS. The position includes practical laboratory work, including DNA and RNA extraction, quality control, and library preparation for sequencing. A central part of the work is the development, optimization, and validation of sequencing-based methods, including targeted approaches such as Cas9-based sequencing.

You are expected to participate in experimental design, method development, and documentation, as well as contribute to the implementation of new diagnostic analyses. The role involves close collaboration with bioinformaticians, physicians, and other researchers in both local and international collaborations.

Qualifications

Experience in method development and optimization within sequencing-based analyses is desirable, as is experience with RNA-seq and transcriptomic methods. Previous work with targeted sequencing strategies, for example Cas9-based techniques, is also considered an advantage. Experience in analyzing complex genomic regions, such as repetitive or hard-to-sequence areas, is also valuable.

Furthermore, experience from clinically oriented research environments or projects where advanced sequencing technologies are applied is a merit.

We place great emphasis on personal suitability. The work requires attention to detail, initiative, and good teamwork skills. You should thrive in a dynamic environment where new technologies are quickly implemented and developed.

About the Position

The employment is fixed-term for 4 months. The position is full-time. Start date by agreement. Location: Uppsala
