Description
The Department of Chemistry – Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry. The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. Highly successful, internationally competitive research is conducted across the department's six programs. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often involving international collaboration, and we see continued strong growth within our field. The department has educational responsibilities within engineering and advanced engineering programs as well as master's programs. More information can be found on our website.
Job Description
We are looking for a motivated, ambitious, and creative PhD student to study next-generation batteries with a special focus on sodium batteries. The aim is to experimentally study and develop new electrolytes from commercial materials, as well as to evaluate mechanisms at the molecular level and the performance of these with both sodium metal and high-entropy anodes as well as various suitable cathode materials.
Unconventional electrolyte concepts such as "molten salt electrolytes" (MSEs) and "deep eutectic electrolytes" (DEEs) are of particular interest.
The PhD student will be part of Professor Patrik Johansson's research group at Uppsala University, which in turn is part of the research environment Ångström Advanced Battery Centre (ÅABC). This fundamental but application-inspired research project is linked to national and international collaborations and is funded by the Swedish Research Council within the framework of a Distinguished Professorship grant for “Next Generation Batteries”.
The PhD student's main tasks are to engage in their research studies, which include active participation in research projects and PhD courses. The duties may also include teaching and other assignments (maximum 20%). Both short and long-term business trips may occur.
Qualifications
Eligibility for higher education at the doctoral level requires the applicant to have:
- a master's degree in chemistry (or related fields) and a good understanding of physical chemistry and materials chemistry, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level (of which 15 higher education credits constitute an independent project), with content relevant to the doctoral education, or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
The applicant must further have:
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
- knowledge of and experience in battery and electrolyte chemistry and technology
Great importance will also be attached to personal qualities such as good teamwork skills, drive and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability required to complete the doctoral education.
Desirable/Qualifying
- previous experience with electrochemical methods for battery characterization/evaluation
