Description

Cultural geography is one of the oldest educational and research environments at Karlstad University. Cross-border collaborations with surrounding institutions and global perspectives are integral to our work. The subject is responsible for education within several undergraduate programs as well as advanced-level programs. Undergraduate education is primarily conducted within four educational orientations: Urban and Regional Planning, Tourism and Place Design, the Master’s program Spatial and Social Transformations of Society, and teacher education at various levels.

Job Description

The position is primarily focused on teaching in cultural geography and tourism studies. As a staff member of the department, you will be part of a teaching team and will mainly teach within the aforementioned educational programs and on standalone courses. In addition to teaching, the role includes supervision and examinations, as well as active participation in the development of the subject and the department. The teaching focus is on societal transformations related to spatial processes, globalization, and mobility. More specifically, the emphasis is on the digitalization of society, socio-economic changes, and global flows, and how these co-create new geographical and social contexts. Furthermore, the position involves applying critical perspectives on spatial transformation and teaching about issues concerning place, power, identity, and the interplay between local and global dynamics in a changing society.

The position requires high presence and active participation at the workplace. According to the working time agreement, a University Lecturer has 10–20 percent time for competence development, which can be expanded with external research funding.

Qualifications

To be eligible for appointment as a University Lecturer in Cultural Geography, one must have a professional degree of at least 180 ECTS credits or a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Geography. Eligibility-granting university pedagogy education or equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways is required. If this education is lacking, an appointment may still be made, provided that the appointee commits to completing it during the first two years of employment. Since most teaching is conducted in Swedish and English, good proficiency in both oral and written communication in these languages is required.

Assessment Criteria

In assessing applicants for the position, the following are of particular importance:

• You have both broad and deep knowledge in cultural geography, as well as documented experience in teaching the subject.
• You have good collaboration skills, as much of the work is carried out in various teaching teams.

We place great emphasis on:

• You have pedagogical skill and experience with hybrid teaching, where campus and distance education occur synchronously.
• You have documented teaching experience in the following orientations: tourism studies and urban and regional planning.

It is also important that:

• You have good ability to work independently and take initiative.

The following are also considered meritorious:

• Experience in pedagogical development work and management of activities within higher education.
• Experience in scientific work.
• Experience in collaboration with the surrounding society.

Conditions

Fixed-term part-time position, starting on August 15, 2026, until December 31, 2026, with a workload of 50 percent, with a possibility of extension.
