For multilingual students, the mother tongue is a crucial key to both knowledge development and security in learning. According to the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket), mother tongue instruction strengthens students' opportunities to achieve school goals by developing both the mother tongue and the Swedish language.

We are now looking for a Mother Tongue Teacher in Romani for the City of Karlstad! The position is located within the Mother Tongue Unit, where we organize mother tongue instruction and study guidance in approximately 35 languages across primary and upper secondary schools.

As a Mother Tongue Teacher with us, you play a central role as a linguistic and pedagogical bridge between the student's mother tongue and Swedish. You support students' learning and knowledge development in close collaboration with the school's other staff.

You will become part of an engaged and competent team of approximately 45 colleagues who work together to give students the best possible conditions for success.

Responsibilities

As a Mother Tongue Teacher, you are responsible for planning, implementing, and following up on mother tongue instruction and/or study guidance in Romani for students in the municipality's primary and upper secondary schools. You create high-quality teaching where students' linguistic and academic development is the focus, and you actively work to create an inclusive and secure learning environment.

The role includes stimulating students' interest in language and culture, as well as strengthening their multilingual identity. By adapting teaching to students' needs and prerequisites, you contribute to their achievement of goals in various subjects.

You plan and structure your teaching independently and use digital tools as a natural part of both teaching, documentation, and follow-up. You are also expected to continuously monitor students' development and provide feedback that supports their learning.

As a Mother Tongue Teacher, you have an important role in collaboration with the school's other staff. You cooperate with class teachers, subject teachers, and student health services to create good conditions for students' learning and participation.

The teaching is located at several schools within the City of Karlstad and may also be conducted via remote teaching, which requires flexibility and good ability to plan and organize your work.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have a teacher's degree or another relevant academic degree with a pedagogical focus, as well as good knowledge of the school's governing documents. You have Romani as your mother tongue and very good knowledge of Swedish, both in speech and writing.

It is meritorious if you have a teaching license with eligibility in mother tongue, further education in language or pedagogy, and experience in mother tongue instruction, study guidance, or similar assignments.

According to the Swedish National Agency for Education, teaching should primarily be conducted by licensed and eligible teachers. If a license is missing, employment may still be relevant, provided you have the right competence and are assessed as suitable for the assignment. For work in schools, good knowledge of the Swedish language corresponding to at least level C1 is also required, as the language is a central part of the assignment.

As a person, you are responsible and independent in your professional role. You have a pedagogical and flexible working style, are solution-focused, and open to developing new ways of working. You feel confident using digital tools as support in teaching.

You have good cooperation skills and contribute to a positive work environment. Your teaching is characterized by quality, clarity, and a strong focus on student development. You adapt teaching based on students' different needs and create a secure and inclusive learning environment.

Great importance will be attached to personal qualities.
