Doctoral Student in Meteorology, Statistics, and Dynamics of Multivariate Extreme Weather Events

Do you want to work with research on the statistics and dynamics of multivariate extreme weather events, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, advantageous working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a doctoral position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in earth sciences. Here, broad expertise contributes to solutions for important societal challenges.

The Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and through advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the development of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water technology, and sustainable development.

Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and on Campus Gotland.

Our six research divisions:

  • Geophysics
  • Air, Water, and Landscape Science
  • Mineralogy, Petrology, and Tectonics
  • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development
  • Paleobiology
  • Wind Energy

For more information, see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper (https://www.uu.se/geovetenskaper)

The Air, Water, and Landscape Science program (LUVAL) brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. See LUVAL for more information about the program.

You will work within the ERC project "Dynamics, predictability, and trends of multivariate extreme weather events".

Responsibilities

The project focuses on quantitative analyses of multivariate extreme weather events in mid-latitudes, in the current and future climate. In your work, you will compile statistical measures for multivariate extreme weather events and link their dynamics and occurrence to specific atmospheric circulation patterns. There is an opportunity to engage in teaching and supervision up to 20%. You will be placed at the Department of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but are expected to travel both within and outside Sweden.

Qualifications

Eligibility for doctoral studies requires that the applicant has:

  • Completed an advanced level degree in climate science, meteorology, statistics, physics, or a related field, or
  • Completed at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits in the aforementioned subjects, or
  • Acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

We are looking for someone who is driven, works independently, and is proactive. You must demonstrate solid knowledge in programming for data analysis and have excellent skills in expressing yourself orally and in writing in English. We also require good collaboration skills, as the work involves collaborations with various research groups internationally.

Desirable/Additional Qualifications

An understanding of atmospheric dynamics and previous experience with the analysis of large amounts of climate data or physical processes causing extreme weather is an advantage. We also value relevant experience outside the academic sector.

Regulations for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Sections 1-7, as well as in the university's rules and guidelines.
