Postdoc in Exposure to and Effects of Extreme Climate Events

Would you like to work on exposure to and the effects of extreme climate events, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, advantageous working conditions? We welcome applications for a postdoc position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in earth sciences. Here, broad expertise contributes to solutions for important societal challenges.

The Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water technology, and sustainable development.

Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from more than 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and on Campus Gotland.

Our six research divisions:

  • Geophysics
  • Air, water, and landscape science
  • Mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics
  • Natural resources and sustainable development
  • Paleobiology
  • Wind energy

The Air, Water, and Landscape Science program (LUVAL) brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. See: information about the Air, Water, and Landscape Science program.

You will contribute to an EU project focusing on data compilation and attribution of extreme climate events and their effects, and will be active within the Swedish Centre for Extreme Climate Events (CLIMES).

Job Responsibilities

You will work with data collection on and analysis of exposure to and the effects of extreme climate events in mid-latitudes. The work will cover different categories of events, such as heatwaves, cold spells, storms, and droughts. The purpose is to link the physical events with exposure and effects in a harmonized database. Teaching may be included, up to 20%. You will be based at the Department of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but are expected to travel both within and outside Sweden.

Qualifications

A PhD in climatology, meteorology, disaster science, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related disciplines, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD in the aforementioned subjects. The degree must be completed no later than the time the employment decision is made. Preference is given to those who have obtained their degree within the last three years. When calculating the three-year timeframe, the starting point is the last day of application. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust positions in trade unions, etc.

We are looking for someone who is driven, works independently, and is proactive. You should enjoy developing and testing new ideas. You must also demonstrate the ability to communicate your research in a time-efficient manner through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals, and have excellent skills in speaking and writing in English. You need to have good teamwork skills as the work involves collaboration with various international research circles and centers.

Desirable/Additional Qualifications

Previous experience with the analysis of large climate datasets and work on the effects of extreme weather is highly meritorious. We value high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
