Bioinformatician at Akademiska Hospital

Area of Operations: Academic Laboratory

We are Akademiska Hospital – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we offer healthcare to two million people in Central Sweden. Something is always happening here – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. Here, you will experience both tough challenges and fantastic events, within a strong community of colleagues. We welcome your application!

Our Operations

Molecular diagnostics and clinical genetics is an expanding operation at the Rudbeck Laboratory in Uppsala. We are an accredited, highly specialized operation that performs diagnostics of congenital and acquired genetic abnormalities and offers genetic counseling with patient clinics. Currently, approximately 100 people work at the clinic with healthcare, research, and development. The operation is accredited according to ISO 15189 and environmentally certified according to ISO 14001.

We are now looking for one to three bioinformaticians for our operations.

Are we the right fit for you?

Do you want to contribute to tomorrow's precision diagnostics in a highly specialized clinical operation? Here, you will have a key role in the development and operation of bioinformatic analyses for genetic diagnostics. You will work closely with hospital geneticists, molecular biologists, physicians, and other laboratory personnel in an operation where bioinformatics is an integrated and operation-critical part of the diagnostics.

In the role, you work with sequence-based analyses within hereditary diseases and/or cancer diagnostics – from targeted gene panels to whole-genome sequencing. Our bioinformatics is developed in close collaboration with Clinical Genomics Uppsala at the Science for Life Laboratory, where the Snakemake-based project Hydra Genetics plays a central role. We primarily work with data from Illumina, but long-read technologies from PacBio and Oxford Nanopore are also used to an increasing extent.

The position combines the development of existing analyses as well as the development and introduction of new analyses with responsibility for managing, quality assuring, and accrediting methods used in clinical routine. Initially, the focus will be on building and establishing routines for quality assurance and support of the clinical production. The role means that you will play a central part in establishing and developing bioinformatic processes in the operation. Here, you become part of an engaged workplace with high competence, strong collaboration, and a clear focus on quality, innovation, and patient benefit.

Are you the right person for us?

We are looking for you who have a relevant university education in bioinformatics, computer science, molecular biology, biotechnology, or another related natural science or technical field. A doctoral education in a relevant subject area is meritorious.

You have experience with bioinformatic analyses of sequence data and are accustomed to working in Linux and cluster environments. You need good knowledge of Python. We would appreciate it if you have experience with workflow management, preferably with Snakemake, as well as developing, adapting, and managing robust analysis pipelines for sequence data. It is also meritorious if you have experience with container software, primarily Apptainer (Singularity). Experience with version control, scripting, and structured development work is also important.

It is meritorious if you have experience with diagnostic work, especially within clinical genetics or molecular pathology. Knowledge of quality assurance, validation, and work in regulated or accredited operations is also an advantage. You need to be able to express yourself well in Swedish, both orally and in writing, as you will work closely with laboratory personnel, physicians, and other bioinformaticians in the clinical daily routine.

As a person, you are analytical, meticulous, and responsible. You thrive working both independently and in close collaboration with others, and have the ability to translate technical competence into solutions that work in clinical routine. We also value that you are structured, development-oriented, and want to contribute to strengthening and further developing the operation with a focus on quality and patient benefit.

Our operation is constantly developing, and we would be pleased if you want to contribute to improvements that strengthen the quality for both patients and employees. In the recruitment process, we make a holistic assessment of competence, experience, and personal suitability, and are looking for you who have the best conditions to contribute to both the assignment and the continued development of the operation.

We Offer

We offer permanent employment. Probationary period may apply. Start date is by agreement. Here, you receive benefits that make a difference, read about the benefits here (https://regionuppsala.se/formaner/ (https://regionuppsala.se/formaner/)).
