The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry. The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. Highly successful, internationally recognized research is conducted across the department's six programs. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often involving international collaboration, and we see continued strong growth within our field. The department has educational responsibilities within engineering and master's programs. More information is available on our website.
The doctoral student will be part of Erik Johansson's research group within the doctoral program in Physical Chemistry.
Description of subject/research project:
Quantum dots offer opportunities for high efficiencies in converting thermal radiation into electricity and present interesting new phenomena related to quantum effects.
In this project, quantum dots that absorb thermal radiation will be synthesized and characterized in detail. From these quantum dots, we will prepare thermophotovoltaic devices consisting of a thin layer of quantum dots between two suitable contacts to convert thermal radiation into electricity. These will be studied using various electrical and optical methods, as well as advanced methods based on X-ray radiation.
The research will be carried out in collaboration with several researchers and research groups in Sweden and internationally. Part of the work involving characterization with X-ray methods will be performed at synchrotron facilities in different countries.
Job Responsibilities
The main task of a doctoral student is to pursue their doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral education courses. The responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however, this will not exceed 20% of working time.
Qualification Requirements
Eligible for education at the doctoral level is someone who has:
- completed a degree at advanced level in chemistry, materials science, or physics, or equivalent, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level (of which 15 higher education credits constitute an independent project), with content relevant to the doctoral education, or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
The applicant must further have:
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
Great importance will also be attached to personal qualities such as good teamwork skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability required to complete the doctoral education.
