The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University is now advertising a position as University Lecturer in Computer Science with a focus on AI and Cybersecurity.

Currently, approximately 60 people work within the field of computer science. Research and education in computer science are focused on distributed systems and data communication, data security and personal privacy, and software development, where AI plays a central role in research across all three areas. In autumn 2025, we launched a bachelor's program with a focus on AI that received a record number of applications from both international and domestic applicants. The activities are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional partners from academia, the public sector, and industry. At the department, we place great emphasis on close collaboration between research groups and focus areas.

As a University Lecturer with a focus on AI and cybersecurity, you will be a key part of further broadening and strengthening the competence within the research group PriSec (Privacy and Security) as well as within the department as a whole.

The research conducted within PriSec covers a range of different areas within cybersecurity, such as network security, cybersecurity pedagogy, test facilities for cybersecurity in the form of cyber ranges, generative AI for offensive cybersecurity, privacy-enhancing tools and technologies, e-health, usable data security and personal privacy, and trustworthy AI. PriSec coordinates and participates in several national and EU-funded projects concerning robust and trustworthy AI, AI-based cybersecurity attacks, and measures to counteract them. These include, among others, the EU's Horizon 2020 project TRUMAN and the KK Foundation's projects DRIVE, SynthIA, and OPEHRA.

Job Responsibilities

In the role of University Lecturer, you will contribute to both teaching and research with a focus on AI and cybersecurity. The position involves teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, with a focus on conveying current and research-based knowledge in AI and machine learning. This includes teaching courses aligned with your own research and expertise. Teaching in other areas within the broader educational offerings in computer science may also be included. The responsibilities also include course administration and development, as well as supervision of bachelor's and master's theses. Supervision of doctoral students may also be part of the position.

Regarding research, you are expected to: (a) conduct innovative research related to AI and cybersecurity, thereby contributing to PriSec and to the department as a whole in collaboration with other research groups, and (b) strengthen the department's research competence using AI in relevant areas, such as AI for cybersecurity, cybersecurity aspects of AI, and the reliability of AI-based systems.

The ability to collaborate with other colleagues at the department, representatives from industry, and other colleagues in academia is of utmost importance. As a University Lecturer, you are expected to develop our international networks and contribute to increasing research funding at the national and international levels.

You are also expected to collaborate with the surrounding society for mutual exchange and to ensure that the knowledge and competence available at the university benefit society.
