Description of the subject area

Neurosurgery is a highly specialized medical and scientific field encompassing diagnostics, surgical treatment, and neuro-intensive care for diseases and injuries of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

Job Responsibilities

The duties include research, teaching, clinical practice, and administration. Teaching responsibilities include course coordination, course administration, and supervision of doctoral students. The incumbent is also responsible for following developments within their own field. One-third of the employment consists of clinical work as a specialist physician.

Qualifications

Eligibility for appointment as a professor requires demonstrated scientific and pedagogical competence (Higher Education Act, Chapter 4, Section 3). According to the Employment Regulations for Uppsala University (AO), a general requirement for teachers is to possess the personal qualities necessary to perform the duties of the position well (AO § 5).

Scientific competence must be demonstrated through independent research efforts and by having merits that, from an international perspective, are of very high quality.

Pedagogical competence must be demonstrated through extensive merits in education (see AO 22 §). Additionally, the applicant must show well-documented competence in supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. A prerequisite for pedagogical competence is the completion of a higher education pedagogy course relevant to the activity, lasting at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge.

Eligibility for this position requires a medical degree and specialist competence in neurosurgery.

Evaluation Criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, primary emphasis will be placed on scientific competence, followed by pedagogical competence. However, an overall assessment will be made such that an applicant with a significant advantage in pedagogical competence may be ranked ahead of an applicant with a certain advantage in scientific competence. Clinical competence, as well as leadership and collaboration, are also significant for the position and will be weighted accordingly.

Evaluation Criteria, Additional Competence

Administrative competence and leadership skills are important for the position and will be weighted. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society, as well as to inform about research and development work, will be considered.

Administrative competence is demonstrated, among other things, by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an effective and purpose-adapted manner, as well as by the ability to set and adhere to timeframes.

Leadership skills are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the prerequisites needed to efficiently achieve common goals.

In a combined assessment of applicants' merits, parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, trade union assignments, military service, or similar factors shall be considered as work experience (94 § AO).

When the university appoints new teachers, applicants shall be chosen who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skills, are judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing current job duties and contributing to a positive development of the activity (4 § AO).

The gender equality perspective shall be applied in appointments if, after a qualitative assessment, it appears that two applicants of different genders have equal or nearly equal merits and if one gender is underrepresented (constituting less than 40% within the current position category and at the current workplace) (95 § AO).

All merits must be documented so that both quality and scope can be assessed.

International experts may be consulted in the assessment of submitted applications. In such cases, application documents written in Swedish may need to be sent to a translator hired by the university. Therefore, it is advisable to submit the application in English.

Welcome to submit your application by June 17, UFV-PA 2025/3235
