Description
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University is now advertising a position as Assistant Professor in Computer Science with a focus on Trustworthy AI. The recruitment targets ambitious and qualified researchers in the field who are at the beginning of their careers and wish to gain academic and pedagogical merit.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science comprises two research subjects: mathematics and computer science. Currently, approximately 110 people work at the department. Within computer science, research and education are focused on distributed intelligent systems and communication, security and privacy, and software quality. The activities are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional partners from both academia and industry.
AI is now an integrated part of the work within all research groups, and a new bachelor's program with a focus on AI started in autumn 2025. The subject of computer science is active in Horizon Europe projects and national research projects focusing on trustworthy AI to strengthen the robustness, reliability, transparency, and explainability of AI systems, as well as to handle ethical principles and the challenges AI entails. The subject also has a clear ambition to further strengthen its AI profile, with a special focus on trustworthy AI. As an Assistant Professor in trustworthy AI, you will play a central role in establishing and developing a clear research profile in the area.
Responsibilities
In the role of Assistant Professor, you are expected to conduct innovative research within trustworthy AI and thereby contribute to the building of a research profile in the area. You are expected to contribute to and develop technical knowledge within robust, transparent, fair, and secure AI systems. A doctoral student will be recruited in connection with the employment, and you are expected to play a central role in supervision.
The ability to collaborate with other colleagues at the department, representatives from industry, and other colleagues within academia is of utmost importance. As an Assistant Professor, you are expected to develop our international networks and contribute to increasing research funding at both the national and international levels. You are also expected to actively contribute to teaching at the department in the form of courses at both undergraduate and advanced levels. The responsibilities also include course administration and development, as well as supervision of bachelor's and master's theses. Research constitutes at least 75% of the employment. Supervision of doctoral students may also be included as a task.

Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is someone who has completed a PhD in computer science or has equivalent scientific competence in AI. In the first instance, the position is intended for those whose PhD is not older than five years or who have achieved equivalent competence within that time, as of the last day of the application period. However, those who have completed a PhD or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
The work requires good knowledge of English and Swedish. If knowledge of Swedish is lacking, employment may still take place provided that the employee actively works to acquire the skills.
Furthermore, completed university teaching education is required according to Karlstad University's employment regulations. If university teaching education is lacking, employment may still take place if the employee completes the education during the first two years of employment or applies to validate equivalent knowledge.

- Ability to conduct high-quality research and gain academic merit to meet the eligibility requirements for a position as University Lecturer.
- Ability to gain pedagogical merit to meet the eligibility requirements for a position as University Lecturer.
- Ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to communicate research and development work.
