On-Call Rescue Personnel (RiB) – Create Safety in Strängnäs, Mariefred, and Åker Styckebruk

Do you want to create safety, security, and care for those who live and stay in our area?

The Rescue Service in Strängnäs Municipality works with two main areas: operational activities (dispatch, training, equipment maintenance) and preventive activities (inspections, education, advisory services). Together, we work towards two overarching goals: to reduce the risk of fires and other accidents occurring, and to ensure that damages are minimized when an accident does occur. We aim to provide our residents with a safe and secure municipality to live and work in.

The operational activities are organized with both full-time and on-call (RiB) staff. Together, we possess a broad competence that is often crucial during various rescue operations. The preventive activities focus on promoting good fire protection and measures that prevent and hinder accidents in society.

We are seeking on-call rescue personnel for the Rescue Service operations in Strängnäs, Mariefred, and Åker Styckebruk. As on-call rescue personnel (RiB), you have a mission alongside your main job and respond to alarms in the area where you live and work. You become part of a team responsible for carrying out rescue operations and contributing to community safety.

Number of positions: 10

Job Responsibilities

Being on-call rescue personnel means you live and work as usual, but during certain weeks, you are on standby. This means you must be able to respond to alarms at any time of day or night.

When on standby, you carry your pager and must be able to reach the fire station within 6 minutes in Mariefred/Åker Styckebruk and within 10 minutes in Strängnäs. From there, you depart with your colleagues for various rescue operations. This may involve fires in buildings, vehicles, or forests/land. You may also encounter traffic accidents, automatic alarms, acute medical cases where you provide first aid while waiting for an ambulance, or other incidents where people need help quickly.

Your task is to create safety, help those affected, and minimize damage as much as possible together with your colleagues. Between alarms, you train and educate regularly. You become part of a group where cooperation, responsibility, and trust are decisive.

About the Assignment:

  • Standby according to a schedule, usually every third or fourth week.
  • A standby week is 168 hours (24/7 for seven days).
  • Opportunity to swap standby shifts with colleagues if needed.
  • You operate from the fire station in Strängnäs, Mariefred, or Åker Styckebruk.
  • You participate in training approximately 3 hours per week, usually in the evenings during your standby week.

Important to Know!

  • The part-time firefighter assignment is a secondary occupation and cannot be a full-time job.
  • You have another primary employer or main occupation.
  • You must be able to leave your main job immediately upon alarm.
  • You are expected to maintain good physical fitness to handle the assignment.
  • We conduct annual medical checks and offer PSA tests for employees over 50 years of age.
  • We conduct alcohol tests for all personnel.

We are recruiting over the next 8 months and filling positions on an ongoing basis. We strive for increased gender equality and therefore welcome female applicants.

Qualifications

You do not need previous professional experience as a firefighter; the required training will be provided by us during employment. In the recruitment process, we instead look for various qualities and personal traits that are important in the complex work of a firefighter.

You must have:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Very good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written.
  • A driver's license, minimum class B, and good driving skills.
  • Meet the swimming requirements (Swedish Life Saving Society's Gold Buoy).
  • Good physical fitness and health (including passing a treadmill test with equipment at 4.5 km/h).

You must live and work in a location that allows you to reach the fire station within 6 or 10 minutes, respectively, when on standby.

Previous experience from rescue services, healthcare, or other operational activities is an asset but not a requirement.

Your personal qualities are important to us. You have your heart in the right place with a willingness to help your fellow human beings. You are communicative with a high ability to collaborate with others and possess personal maturity with good self-awareness. Your ability to work structured in pressurized situations and in various environments makes you a valued colleague in the team.

What do you get as a firefighter?

  • Challenging and socially beneficial tasks.
  • Favorable employment terms, including wellness contributions.
  • Pension contributions.
  • Training for the job (starting with a three-week preparatory course).
  • Annual health check-up with a doctor and fitness test.
  • If you do not already have a C-class driver's license, we finance your training up to a maximum amount.
  • Regular training and continuous professional development.
  • A varied and socially important assignment.
  • Compensation according to the collective agreement for on-call rescue personnel (RiB).
  • Access to training and gym 24/7.
  • Work clothes and equipment (uniform).

This also gives you the opportunity for further development and career progression within the rescue service.

Employment Type: Permanent employment after completed and approved training (fixed-term employment until preparatory training and C-class license are arranged).

More information about the tests conducted will be provided in connection with a potential interview.

We conduct ongoing selection – welcome to apply today!
