PhD Student in Clinical Genetics

Workplace Description

The Department of Clinical Genetics, within the Faculty of Medicine's Department of Laboratory Medicine, conducts research in cancer genetics and new targeted cancer therapies.

The department consists of ten research groups with a total of about 60 employees, promoting strong collaboration in a well-integrated research environment.

In our research group, we use large-scale sequencing, molecular genetic methods, and functional in vivo models to understand how childhood leukemia arises and develops. Our long-term goals are to use in-depth knowledge of leukemia biology to identify new diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as targets for new therapies. The research primarily focuses on understanding the biology behind infant leukemia with genetic alterations in the KMT2A gene. The working language is English, and the research group is led by Associate Professor Anna Hagström. The position is located at BMC in Lund.

Job Responsibilities and Areas of Responsibility

In addition to following the study plan for the doctoral education and participating in relevant courses within the education, the following tasks are also included:

  • High-resolution methods such as large-scale sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of data from large-scale sequencing, including data from single-cell sequencing.
  • DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, cell culture, and work with experimental animal models.
  • The applicant is expected to independently interpret results and acquire new knowledge.
  • Working hours may include weekends if necessary.

The doctoral student is expected to actively participate in seminars and other important meetings and present the project at meetings in accordance with the study plan. Work with animal models is included.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Documented research experience in genetics.
  • Good analytical skills, drive, and good collaboration skills.
  • Very good knowledge of English.

Requirements for Employment

  • Experience working with large-scale sequencing data and analysis of mutation, copy number, and structural variant data.
  • Experience in cell culture and sterile work.
  • Experience in flow cytometry.
  • Experience using RStudio.
  • Good knowledge of tumor biology and cancer genetics.
  • Basic knowledge of working with laboratory animals.
  • Ability to interpret and acquire new knowledge as well as compile data for presentations and read and interpret scientific articles.
  • The tasks will be performed in close collaboration with other group members, thus good collaboration skills are required.
  • Very good reading and writing skills in English.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. We are looking for a driven, curious, and responsible person. Since the research group operates in an international environment, good communication and collaboration skills are required. Furthermore, the tasks require organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.

Meritorious for Employment

  • Strong background in medicine.

Eligibility

Basic eligibility for doctoral education is granted to those who have:

  • completed a degree at an advanced level,
  • fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
  • acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Assessment Criteria

Regulations for employment as a doctoral student can be found in the ordinance SFS 1998:80. Only those who are admitted to doctoral education may be appointed. In the appointment process, primary consideration will be given to the degree of ability to benefit from doctoral education. In addition to the obligation to engage in their own doctoral education, the holder may be required to perform duties related to education, research, and administrative work according to special provisions in the ordinance.

Conditions

Fixed-term employment for four years according to HF 5 chap 7§.
