There are approximately 47,000 students and more than 8,800 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We unite in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of humanity.
Lund University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.
Workplace Description
The postdoctoral position is linked to the Department of Clinical Chemistry (Malmö) at the Faculty of Medicine. However, the workplace is BMC (Lund) in close collaboration with the research group for acoustofluidics at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, LTH. You can find more information here.
Within the research group, we value a good working environment with respect and care in our relationships with each other, and strive for a workplace that is perceived as developing and stimulating for all employees. We continuously work to create conditions for job satisfaction, development, and participation for all employees. We care about both physical safety and the psychosocial work environment.
Project Description
The position involves research and development in the field of biomedical engineering. The project focuses on the detection of proteomic changes at the single-cell level in acoustically isolated circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patients with metastatic disease.
Responsibilities and Duties
At Lund University, a postdoctoral appointment should provide opportunities for scientific and pedagogical merit. Primarily, space is given for merit in research, but also for some higher education pedagogical training. The research will include independent planning and execution of experiments to detect proteomic changes in isolated CTCs. This will include cell culture, cell sorting with microfluidics and flow cytometry, as well as operation of mass spectrometers (MS), multi-omics data integration, and analysis.
Detailed Description of Responsibilities:
- Development and optimization of acoustic cell sorting.
- Design and build new methods for acoustic separation of cells.
- Research in single-cell proteomics.
- Publication of research results in reputable scientific journals.
- Presentation of research results at international conferences.
- Supervision of students and doctoral candidates.
- Active pursuit of research funding.
- Administration related to the above responsibilities.
Qualifications
Requirements for the position are:
- PhD or equivalent foreign degree obtained within 3 years from the start of employment.
- The PhD must be completed by the time the employment decision is made.
- Documented ability to conduct high-quality research.
- Documented experience in teaching/supervising students with good references.
- Documented experience in the design and development of acoustofluidics and lab-on-a-chip technology.
- Documented experience in biological mass spectrometry and MS-based proteomics.
- Good knowledge in bioinformatics, such as analysis and interpretation of MS-based proteomic data.
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
Desirable for the position is:
- Assessment of candidates will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as researchers. Special emphasis will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area.
- Experience in validation, performance evaluation, and maintenance of acoustofluidic devices.
- Experience in developing methods to integrate acoustofluidic separation with MS-based proteomic analysis.
- Experience in bioanalytical methods for protein analysis.
- Practical experience in biological sample preparation for proteomic analysis, preferably at the single-cell level.
- Experience in evaluation and maintenance of nLC-MS/MS systems.
- In-depth knowledge and experience in statistical and bioinformatics analysis of proteomic data.
- Experience in programming, e.g., in R, Python, or similar.
You should be motivated to independently conduct proteomic and bioinformatics analysis of CTCs within an international and interactive research group. Consideration will also be given to how the applicant's experience, collaboration skills, and other competencies complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and how they can contribute to its future development.
