About the Position

The department is seeking a project assistant for a fixed-term employment of six months on a full-time basis, starting immediately.

The position is linked to the project Swedish Competence Centre for Satellite-Enabled Social Science Analytics (SESAC). The work involves technical development in geodata management, programming, and machine learning, with a particular focus on the analysis of satellite data and integration with social science questions.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a technical background in areas such as geomatics, geoinformatics, computer science, or related fields. You should have good programming skills (e.g., Python) and documented ability to work with machine learning methods. At the same time, it is important that you have an understanding of or experience with social science applications, particularly related to issues of society, sustainability, or regional development.

The work will be carried out in close collaboration with researchers in both technical and social science environments.

About the Department

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the country's leading knowledge centers for research and education in social and behavioral sciences. The Department of Human Geography and Economic Geography at Lund University is a research-intensive academic unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences. It combines long academic traditions with modern and strongly internationalized research and education. The department offers a wide range of education at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, including internationally oriented programs such as the master's program in Human Geography.

The department has a diverse academic staff. The exact number of staff varies, but currently, the department has about 55-60 academic and administrative employees. The department educates approximately 400 full-time students in undergraduate and master's programs and has about 15 doctoral students.

The research environment is strongly focused on external funding and has been successful in competition at both national and European levels. The department's research and educational activities have received very positive reviews in internal and external evaluations, placing it among Lund University's leading disciplinary environments.
