Workplace Description

The position is located at the Department of Computer Vision and Machine Learning at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is an institution shared by both the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science at Lund University. Within the Department of Computer Vision and Machine Learning, there are several senior researchers and about 20 PhD students. Research in computer vision at the department began in the mid-1980s and currently encompasses (i) geometry and computer vision (including analysis of video, audio, radio, and radar signals), (ii) medical image analysis, and (iii) machine learning and artificial intelligence. The department has extensive experience in fundamental research in computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, as well as a proven ability to translate research results into practical applications for end-users.

The position is funded through seed funding from Lund University to facilitate collaboration between the two strategic research areas eSSENCE and NanoLund. This means that the postdoc will benefit from being part of both of these research networks.

Specific Subject Description

The project involves mathematical modeling of complex flow dynamics, particularly viscoelastic flows in nanostructures. The work includes both mathematical modeling and machine learning, with analyses on both simulated and experimental data.

Job Responsibilities

The main responsibility of the postdoc is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included in the job responsibilities, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. Within the framework of the position, there is an opportunity for three weeks of higher education pedagogical training. The purpose of the position is to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further qualification.

Job responsibilities include:

• Research in the subject area
• Teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
• Supervision of theses and PhD students
• Active work in seeking external research funding
• Collaboration with industry and society
• Administration related to the above job responsibilities.

The research will focus on the development and application of advanced modeling and machine learning methods and may include the following areas:

• Dimensionality reduction
• Data-driven methods for estimating dynamic models
• Data-driven methods for estimating discriminative models
• Design and use of autoencoders (VAEs, GANs), diffusion models, and other machine learning methods for analysis and studies of probability distributions in latent space.
