Communicator with a focus on press and crisis communication

Do you want to work city-wide with press, crisis communication, and development work in an organization that makes a concrete difference for the residents of Malmö every day? We are now looking for a communicator with experience in qualified press work who wants to strengthen our ability to handle complex societal issues and build trust.

Job Responsibilities

The assignment at the city office involves a central role focused on driving, coordinating, and developing our city-wide press communication. It also includes working with crisis communication and larger development and change efforts aimed at improving our ability to communicate clearly, coordinated, and trust-building.

You will be part of an engaged unit within the communications department, focusing on press and crisis communication and led by the press manager. The unit works to create synergies and set direction for the city's press work, in close collaboration with the city's administrations.

Your responsibilities include:

Press and Media

  • working operationally and proactively with press work by handling incoming inquiries and initiating media efforts
  • acting as press officer and advisor in city-wide communication projects
  • setting direction, developing methods, and strategies for the city's press work, in close collaboration with the city's administrations
  • supporting managers and experts in media contacts, message formulation, and preparations
  • ensuring our accessibility and openness by working with Malmö city's press service, monitoring, and training spokespersons in media issues.

Crisis Communication

  • coordinating communication efforts during major events together with emergency functions and other key roles at the city office
  • working as a communicator on standby according to a schedule.

City-wide Development Work

  • playing a central role in strengthening our proactive and reactive ability both in planned communication and in event-driven situations
  • coordinating larger development and change efforts together with colleagues
  • providing communication support to the city office's unit for security and preparedness within relevant areas such as misinformation, preparedness, and civil defense.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

  • a university degree, at least 180 credits in fields such as communication science, journalism, social science, or another area deemed relevant by the employer
  • at least three years of current relevant experience as a communicator with press work and crisis communication involving many internal and external stakeholders
  • at least three years of current experience developing internal methods and strategies for external communication
  • good experience using digital channels and social media in your press work
  • experience acting as an advisor and strategic communication support to management and operations in press and crisis communication issues
  • experience independently driving and leading communication efforts and projects with many stakeholders
  • very good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written
  • very good knowledge of Office 365.

It is a merit if you have:

  • current experience as a communicator in a politically governed organization
  • worked with press communication in various roles and organizations
  • knowledge and experience in preparedness issues and/or civil defense.

You are an analytical and confident communicator who can quickly grasp complex issues and see the big picture even when circumstances change rapidly. You have the initiative and can drive issues forward. You structure, prioritize, and coordinate both ongoing tasks and larger projects involving multiple stakeholders. You have a very good understanding of media logic and news evaluation. You have good pedagogical skills and can summarize complex issues and contexts for different audiences. For you, it is natural to create good relationships and collaborations as you have many points of contact.

About the Workplace

The communications department at the city office consists of three units responsible for digital communication, press and crisis communication, and communication development and projects. We work together with a holistic perspective on the city's and city office's communication efforts, and our mission is to develop the communication area together with the city's other communication functions.

The city office directs, challenges, and strengthens the development capacity in the organization, the city, and the region. We are the municipal executive board's administration and work with a holistic perspective close to the city's leadership. The city office consists of seven different departments and has a total of just over 300 employees. Our departments work within a wide range of areas, and the administration has many employees with high specialist competence.

The operations of Malmö city are organized into 14 administrations. Our common mission is to create welfare and sustainable community development.
