Communicator for the Arctic Center

The Arctic Center is a hub for transdisciplinary research and education at Umeå University. The center offers a unique environment that prioritizes collaboration, networking, and strategic planning to address today's societal challenges.

We work with new and existing interdisciplinary activities focusing on sustainability, climate, health, just transition, green industrialization, indigenous perspectives, and rural issues. The Arctic Center aims for excellence in Arctic research and education while strengthening Umeå University's central position both nationally and internationally. Through research-based knowledge, we promote sustainable development in the Arctic.

The center collaborates internally with the four faculties and the Teacher Education Program at Umeå University, as well as with external partners, particularly within the network The Arctic Six and the University of the Arctic. Through these collaborations, opportunities are created for associated researchers and doctoral students to develop and build their own networks. The Arctic Center also runs an Arctic research school focused on sustainability and supports young researchers, thereby building for the future in Arctic-themed research and education.

We are now seeking a full-time communicator to start as soon as possible by agreement for work at the Arctic Center. The position is organizationally placed at the Department of Language Studies, which is the host institution for the Arctic Center.

Job Description

The main tasks are to be responsible for the Arctic Center's internal and external communication within research and education. This includes creating, producing, revising, sorting, updating, and translating web pages, calendar events, news content, digital mailings, and other communication materials, as well as working with the existing graphic profile (for example, creating and ordering printed materials and ensuring that the profile is used consistently). The role involves independent operational responsibility for planning, implementation, further development, and quality assurance of the center's communication work. The work is carried out within the strategic framework set by the center's management.

A central part of the tasks is to act as a content creator and communication hub for the center's network of associated researchers. The assignment involves actively building and developing communication structures that enhance visibility, collaboration, and information flow within the network.

Furthermore, the tasks include managing the Arctic Center's communication channels, such as the website and digital communication platforms, as well as developing website profiles, thematic networks, and strengthening connections to external Arctic organizations. This includes communication work related to Arctic Six (A6) and Umeå University's engagement in UArctic's thematic networks.

Additional tasks include:

  • Monitoring activities of the center's associated researchers to identify opportunities to communicate and highlight their research
  • Creating and distributing the center's weekly newsletter to the network of associated researchers and monitoring communication from external Arctic organizations
  • Contributing to an active presence in relevant communication contexts such as networks and events, etc.
  • Translating the center's written communication between English and Swedish

The communicator also serves as the center's representative in Umeå University's communication working group.

Tasks may vary over time.

Qualifications

For this position, we are looking for someone with a university degree in communication and relevant experience in producing communication work. The ideal candidate should have experience and the ability to produce content as well as develop, analyze, and follow up on materials for evaluating communication efforts based on set goals, both for individual activities and for the overall goals of the organization, and use the results to further develop communication work.

Experience with CMS, Office365, and InDesign is also required.

To thrive in this position, you should be motivated by collaborating with others and managing multiple ongoing tasks simultaneously. You should have good initiative and planning skills, be meticulous, and have the ability to work independently and take personal responsibility. It is also important that you have strong communication skills and the ability to solve problems in dialogue with colleagues.

Excellent knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written, is a requirement for the position.

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in communication work within research and education
  • Experience working with other email clients and the entire Adobe Creative Cloud as well as EPI-server.
  • Experience using AI-based tools to support communication work, such as for analysis, text production, or workflow efficiency.
  • Knowledge of actors and organizations active in Arctic and polar issues
  • Experience monitoring and analyzing communication to identify opportunities for research and education collaborations and relevant calls
  • Experience collaborating in larger communication networks and creating joint activities
  • Experience in communication work related to international academic networks

Other Information

The position is permanent and will commence as soon as possible. A probationary period may apply. The place of work is Umeå, and a high presence in the activities is required.
