Postdoctoral Researcher in Geosciences
The Department of Geological Sciences is one of the departments within the Faculty of Science, offering education at the master's, bachelor's, and introductory course levels.
The department supports a wide range of fundamental research in marine geology and geophysics, geochemistry, and classical geology.
More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-geologiska-vetenskaper/ (https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-geologiska-vetenskaper/).
Project Description
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for our interdisciplinary project focusing on understanding submarine glacial landforms and their connection to glacier and ocean dynamics. This position is suitable for a geoscientist with expertise in submarine geomorphology and glacial geology, as well as experience working with marine geophysical mapping data. You will analyze high-resolution terrain models of the seabed primarily collected with multibeam sonar systems and interpret these to deepen our understanding of ice dynamics, interactions between ice and ocean, and processes shaping the seabed. You will:
- Collaborate with specialists in machine learning to develop models for automatic identification and classification of submarine landforms.
- Contribute crucial geological insights to validate and improve machine learning results.
- Enhance the understanding of how glacial ice moves, melts, and impacts ocean systems in relation to climate change.
This postdoctoral position is for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position is part of a project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, focusing on using machine learning to interpret structures and patterns on the seabed and enhance understanding of marine glacier dynamics. The project involves collaboration with other postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and senior researchers, as well as international partners at the University of New Hampshire (USA), Scripps Institution of Oceanography (USA), and JAMSTEC (Japan). The Department of Geological Sciences hosts one of four regional centers within the international Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project. Launched in 2017, Seabed 2030 aims to inspire ocean mapping and deliver a complete map of the world's seabed by 2030 to promote research and the betterment of humanity.
This postdoctoral position offers you a unique opportunity to engage in a broad international network and contribute to advancing research in submarine glacial morphology, seabed mapping, and climate research.
Eligibility Requirements
A postdoctoral researcher is defined as an employee primarily hired for research who has obtained a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree.
Assessment Criteria
The degree must have been obtained no later than when the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in geosciences and expertise in identifying and classifying submarine glacial landforms using marine geophysical mapping data, particularly multibeam depth data. Documented experience analyzing submarine seabed morphology using marine geophysical data and general GIS applications is highly meritorious.
The candidate should be fluent in English, able to work independently and in a team, and meet deadlines, as the project has specific milestones. The candidate will work closely with a postdoctoral researcher focused on data science to develop machine learning algorithms within the framework of this interdisciplinary project.
Selection
The selection among qualified candidates is based on their expected ability to complete the project tasks. The following criteria are used to assess this ability: the applicant's documented knowledge and skills in the subject of their proposed specialization, ability to express their work verbally and in writing in English, creativity, initiative-taking ability, analytical thinking, independence, and ability to collaborate with other researchers. Evaluation is based on previous education and experience, the quality of previously published research, the ambitions expressed in the motivation letter, the description of the proposed project direction, and any interviews.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is permanent, but at least two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date by agreement.
