Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning for Glacial Landforms
The Department of Geological Sciences is one of the departments within the Faculty of Science, offering programs at the master's, bachelor's, and introductory course levels.
The department supports a wide range of fundamental research in marine geology and geophysics, geochemistry, and classical geology.

Project Description
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for our interdisciplinary project that focuses on applying machine learning to identify and classify glacial landforms on the seafloor using marine geophysical mapping data. This data primarily consists of high-resolution seafloor maps in the form of digital terrain models derived from depth data collected with multibeam sonar. The project's goal is to enhance our understanding of how glaciers move and melt, which ultimately contributes to more reliable forecasts of future changes in glacier systems that are in contact with the ocean under a warmer climate. This position is suitable for a researcher with expertise in machine learning and a strong interest in environmental or geoscientific applications. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will:
- Apply advanced machine learning methods (e.g., supervised learning, clustering, neural networks) to classify submarine landforms.
- Collaborate with geomorphologists to ensure geological relevance and validate model results.
- Contribute to the development of scalable tools for analyzing marine geophysical data and support predictions of glacial dynamics under climate change.
This postdoctoral position is for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position is part of a project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, focusing on using machine learning to interpret structures and patterns on the seafloor and enhance the understanding of marine glacier dynamics. The project involves collaboration with other postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and senior researchers, as well as international partners at the University of New Hampshire (USA), Scripps Institution of Oceanography (USA), and JAMSTEC (Japan). The Department of Geological Sciences hosts one of four regional centers within the international Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project. Launched in 2017, Seabed 2030 aims to inspire ocean mapping and deliver a complete map of the world's seafloor by 2030 to promote research and the betterment of humanity. This initiative provides a unique opportunity for you to engage in a broad international network, utilize advanced machine learning methods in critical environmental issues, and contribute to the development of research on the seafloor and climate change.
Eligibility Requirements
A postdoctoral researcher is defined as an employee primarily hired for research who has obtained a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.
Assessment Criteria
The degree must have been obtained by the time the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the subject area.
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in computer science, geoscience, physics, or applied mathematics with an interest in developing machine learning algorithms to identify and classify glacial landforms on the seafloor. Documented experience in the previous development and application of machine learning algorithms is particularly meritorious. Experience in using high-performance computing infrastructure is also advantageous. The candidate should be fluent in English and able to work independently and in a team, as well as meet deadlines since the project has specific milestones.
The selection among qualified candidates is based on their expected ability to complete the project tasks. The following criteria are used to assess this ability: the candidate's documented knowledge and skills in the subject of their proposed specialization, the ability to express their work verbally and in writing in English, creativity, initiative, analytical thinking, independence, and the ability to collaborate with other researchers. The evaluation is based on previous education and experience, the quality of previously published research, the ambitions expressed in the motivation letter, the description of the proposed project direction, and any interviews.
About the Employment
The position is full-time and is permanent, but for at least two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date by agreement.
