Job Responsibilities

The research project Gender Struggles in the New Conjuncture examines contemporary gender-political conflicts in Europe and analyzes how feminist and LGBTQ+ mobilizations interact with emerging anti-gender movements. In a time of democratic backsliding, the project aims to understand the tactics, agendas, and visions that characterize these movements and their impact on human rights, democracy, and civil society. As a PhD candidate, you will conduct independent research within the project's framework, in an interdisciplinary research team, exploring gender-related conflicts both online and offline.

The PhD program in Gender Studies is full-time, and the candidate must meet the educational requirements for a doctoral degree and actively participate in the department's activities, particularly within the Gender Studies division. The position as a PhD candidate is a fixed-term full-time position for four years. There may be opportunities to participate in teaching or other departmental work up to 20%, which could extend the total employment period to a maximum of five years.

The Department of Gender Studies has a well-established tradition of working within the academic and intellectual field of gender studies by combining advanced theoretical perspectives with solid and reflective empirical analyses, with particular strength in intersectional perspectives on gender and sexuality as well as feminist methods. The call welcomes applications grounded in one or more of these research themes.

As a PhD candidate, you will be part of the overarching research project Gender Struggles in the New Conjuncture. Gender, Sexuality, and the Future of Human Rights in the 21st Century, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. We welcome research proposals that analyze both feminist/LGBTQ+ initiatives and anti-gender movements, focusing on Western, Southern, Central, Northern, and/or Eastern Europe and/or transnational contexts. This requires advanced knowledge of socio-political contexts and at least one relevant language in the chosen region.

The overall goal of the project is to investigate how conflicts around gender and sexuality shape today's political and social landscape in Europe. The project studies both feminist and LGBTQ+ movements advocating for expanded rights and anti-gender movements opposing these. By analyzing their tactics, agendas, and societal visions, the project aims to understand how these opposing forces reshape democratic values and human rights. Ultimately, the research will contribute new knowledge about the emergence of new normative societal foundations in the wake of today's diverging mobilizations. We are now seeking a PhD candidate to conduct research within the project, both independently and in collaboration with the research group. We are looking for a person with a strong motivation to conduct high-quality research, previous experience in ethnographic fieldwork or digital network analysis, and advanced knowledge of languages and socio-political contexts in Western, Southern, Central, Northern, and/or Eastern Europe.
