Project Assistant in Experimental Medical Science

Workplace Description

You will work at the Department of Experimental Medical Science, Lund University, in a research environment with a strong focus on advanced microscopy and three-dimensional imaging of biological tissues.

The operation conducts method development and applied research in image-based analysis of complex biological systems.

The position is placed in a research group working with optical clearing in combination with light sheet microscopy to enable high-resolution 3D imaging of entire organs and larger tissue volumes.

The workplace is located in BMC, Lund, with access to modern instrumentation and close collaboration with other research groups and national/international partners. Job Responsibilities and Duties

As a project assistant, you will work closely with researchers on ongoing projects. Your main tasks will include:

  • Preparing biological tissue samples for optical clearing, including fixation, permeabilization, staining, and RI matching.
  • Conducting imaging with light-sheet microscopy and contributing to the optimization of protocols and experimental setups.
  • Managing and documenting experimental data, including basic image processing, etc.
  • Participating in the planning and execution of experiments together with researchers in the project.
  • Contributing to the laboratory's daily operations, such as orders, logbooks, and quality assurance of methods.

The work mainly takes place in a laboratory environment. Some flexibility in working hours may occur depending on experimental setups.

Qualifications

The requirements for the position are:

  • Completed higher education in biology, biotechnology, biomedicine, molecular biology, or another relevant field.
  • Practical experience working with optical clearing or related preparation methods for 3D imaging.
  • Documented experience with light sheet microscopy or other advanced fluorescence microscopy.
  • Good laboratory skills and the ability to follow and document protocols accurately.
  • Ability to work independently, structured, and with high precision.
  • Good collaborative skills and the ability to communicate well in a research environment.
  • Very good knowledge of English in both spoken and written form.

Desirable qualifications for the position are:

  • Experience working with tissue samples from lungs and/or brain.
  • Knowledge in image analysis and visualization of 3D data (e.g., Imaris, FIJI/ImageJ, or similar software).
  • Experience from similar research projects in microscopy, histology, or spatial biology.
  • Ability to contribute to method development and troubleshooting in experimental protocols.

Other

The position is a fixed-term employment at 100 percent starting March 1 or by agreement, but no later than June 30. A probationary period may be applied.
