Project Leader at the Chemistry Teachers' Resource Center
The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Chemistry Teachers' Resource Center (https://www.su.se/enheter/kemilararnas-resurscentrum), is a national resource center tasked with supporting teachers in primary, secondary, and adult education with chemistry-related issues. The support includes the development of teaching materials, questions regarding implementation from a didactic and practical perspective, professional development, advice, information, and networking. The hub of the operation is the website http://www.su.se/kemilararnas-resurscentrum (http://www.su.se/kemilararnas-resurscentrum). Currently, the staffing at KRC corresponds to 2.7 positions, distributed among five employees, all with experience teaching chemistry in primary or secondary school. Some of the staff have doctoral training, but the center's activities are only to a small extent focused on research.
KRC belongs to the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, DBB, which is one of the larger departments at Stockholm University with around 260 employees. At DBB, there are about 30 research groups, and the projects span a wide range of subjects covering various aspects of structure and function in biological systems. More information about us can be found at: https://www.dbb.su.se/ (https://www.dbb.su.se/).
Job Responsibilities
As a project leader, you will develop educational materials and participate in professional development on chemistry, chemistry didactics, and chemical safety tailored for teachers in primary and secondary education. This development work is partially conducted in collaboration with other organizations, such as resource centers for teachers in Sweden and other countries, the Swedish National Agency for Education, and industry organizations. In your work, you will for example:
- highlight and develop chemistry teaching materials suitable for teaching natural science
- conduct professional development tailored for teaching natural science at the secondary level
- participate in other development projects and professional development related to chemistry education.
According to KRC's statutes, the activities should “develop and quality assure research-based support for chemistry education, inform about new research results and the role of chemistry in society and the environment, develop student experiments, and monitor and advise on safety issues and chemical questions and initiate and conduct professional development for school teachers.” In addition to the center's own website, the KRC Information Letter, newsletters, Facebook page, and the website http://www.chesse.org/sv/ (http://www.chesse.org/sv/) on chemical safety are also important communication channels.
In connection with the introduction of Gy25, many teachers in natural science have contacted us at KRC. Their questions concern basic chemistry and the role of chemistry in society, for example regarding environmental toxins and resource issues, as well as various forms of teaching.
