Uppsala Immigration Lab and Urban Lab Seeking Research Assistants

Uppsala University (https://nek.uu.se/) is one of the largest institutions within the Faculty of Social Sciences, with approximately 100 employees from a dozen countries. Each year, around 1,000 students participate in one of our courses at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. The research focuses on labor market economics, macroeconomics, and public economics. Researchers at the department are often engaged as experts in public inquiries and in the media, and collaborate in many ways with the surrounding society.

Uppsala Immigration Lab (https://www.uu.se/uil/?languageId=3) and Urban Lab (https://urbanlab.ibf.uu.se/?languageId=3) are part of a broad and active research environment at the Department of Economics and the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF). We study central social issues related to migration, integration, and urban development. The research is quantitatively oriented and utilizes rich datasets and modern methods to create new knowledge. Projects are conducted in collaboration with leading researchers nationally and internationally.

Job Responsibilities

We are seeking 1–2 research assistants for a fixed-term position of 6–12 months at Uppsala Immigration Lab and Urban Lab. As a research assistant, you will primarily work on a project about geographical patterns in intergenerational mobility in Sweden, as well as other ongoing projects within UIL and Urban Lab. Job tasks include data cleaning and processing, as well as assisting researchers conducting advanced econometric analysis with large register-based datasets.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree focused on quantitative analysis, such as in economics, political science, statistics, or computer science.
  • Experience in programming in e.g., Stata, R, Python, or ArcGIS.
  • Experience working with register data or similar large datasets.
  • Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities such as collaboration and initiative, flexibility, and the ability to independently analyze data.

Desirable/meritorious

  • A master's degree or ongoing master's studies in fields such as economics, political science, statistics, or computer science is meritorious.
  • Good ability to express yourself well in both spoken and written Swedish or English.

About the Position

Salary: Individual salary setting applies.

Start date: In March 2025 or by agreement.

Employment type: Fixed-term employment for 6–12 months.
