Job Responsibilities

The person employed as a PhD candidate will primarily engage in their own education at the doctoral level.

Other duties at the department related to student education, participation in teaching teams, and administrative work may be included within the framework of the employment (up to 20 percent of the position). Admission to doctoral studies is required for employment as a PhD candidate.

Regulations regarding PhD candidates can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7, in the university's rules and guidelines, and in the general study plan for doctoral education at the Faculty of Law.

Qualifications and Assessment

To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must be qualified. At the Faculty of Law, the applicant must either:

  • have obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree, a Master of Laws degree, or completed the law program in Sweden, or
  • have acquired knowledge within or outside the country that corresponds to what individuals who have obtained the aforementioned degrees can be assumed to possess. In assessing whether the knowledge is sufficient, particular consideration shall be given to what is required to successfully benefit from the education in the specific doctoral subject.

Applicants must have satisfactory knowledge of the Swedish or English languages.

The overarching goals for doctoral education are that the newly graduated doctor should have good conditions for a successful professional life within or outside academia. This includes, among other things, in-depth subject knowledge within the research area, the ability for independent and critical thinking, skills in scientific methods and approaches, the ability to identify interesting and researchable questions, pedagogical skills, and the ability to express oneself well in speech and writing, the ability to operate in an international context, as well as a good ability to understand and manage research ethical issues.

The appointment will be based on an assessment of the applicants' ability to benefit from doctoral education. In the assessment, the project description and the written legal scientific material are the most important. This includes written material, published or unpublished. Primarily, analytical ability, the ability to structure and process, independence, and the novelty value of the intended research project will be assessed. In addition to the written material, other merits may be considered in the assessment of the ability to benefit from doctoral education, such as grades from courses and positions, completed courses, etc. In assessing the applicant's ability to benefit from the education, consideration may also be given to their collaborative ability in various forms, for example in teaching teams.
