Researcher Position at FOI

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.

About the Position

As a researcher, you will be an important part of our team and conduct research and development in collaboration with other researchers and engineers in the field. As part of the research group, you will work with the latest technology in areas such as image processing, signal processing, and deep learning, contributing to the development of new algorithms and systems for reconnaissance, robotics, autonomous ground vehicles, and aircraft, fixed and mobile surveillance systems, target tracking in sensor networks, geoinformatics, terrain analysis, signature analysis, and sensor system evaluation. You are expected to continuously follow developments in the research area.

The work is carried out in project form under the leadership of a project manager and is performed both independently and together with other researchers and engineers. In the role of researcher, you will work with problem formulation, method selection, planning, execution, and analysis of experiments, as well as documentation and presentation of results in reports and articles. The work may also include the application of research results in domain-specific applications for various clients. Project management will eventually be included in the tasks.

About the Unit

Depending on your profile, you will be placed in one of the units within the Sensor Informatics operational area, which belongs to Cyber Defense and Command Technology. Within the Sensor Informatics operational area, FOI conducts applied research primarily for defense and security applications. The focus is on analyzing sensor data from military or civilian reconnaissance and surveillance systems, often with the aim of helping users interpret and understand a situation so they can quickly take the right actions.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

We are looking for someone who holds a PhD or licentiate degree in computer vision, autonomy, control engineering, AI, or another area that FOI deems suitable. You need to have excellent knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.

You have knowledge in some of the following areas:

  • Signal processing and sensor fusion
  • Image analysis and computer vision
  • Machine learning and deep learning
  • Autonomous vehicles and robotics

The position is a permanent employment that may start with a six-month probationary period.
