The Department of Education, Didactics and Educational Sociology (EDU) conducts research, doctoral education, undergraduate education, and commissioned education in the fields of education, didactics, and educational sociology. At EDU, there are also several bachelor's and master's programs, while the department is deeply involved in the teacher education programs offered at Uppsala University.

Responsibilities

The professor will play a central role in academic leadership, administration, and further development of the field of education, in research and teaching provided within bachelor programs, master programs, preschool teacher and teacher programs (including special teacher programs) and doctoral education. Overall, the responsibilities will consist of research, research leadership, teaching, and supervision at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as overall planning of the activities such as formulating research applications. Administrative tasks and collaboration with the surrounding community are also included in the responsibilities. The position may involve leadership assignments at, for example, department or faculty level.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for appointment as professor, the candidate must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical proficiency. Scientific proficiency must have been demonstrated through independent research contributions that are significant in relation to the subject matter of the position and the tasks included in the appointment, and through the candidate's activities maintaining high international and national quality. The applicant must have demonstrated the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research as well as the ability to obtain research funding in competition. The proficiency must qualitatively and quantitatively exceed what is required for docent competence. Pedagogical proficiency must have been demonstrated through merits in education and teaching as described below under assessment criteria. Furthermore, the applicant must have documented proficiency in supervising students at undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as having supervised doctoral students to the completion of their PhD as the main supervisor. A prerequisite for pedagogical proficiency is completion of relevant higher education pedagogical training, comprising at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the higher education pedagogical training may be completed during the first two years of employment. The pedagogical training must include training for supervision at the doctoral level. Documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. Those who do not have documented ability to teach in Swedish must acquire this ability within the first two years of employment. The applicant must possess the personal qualities required to perform the duties of the position well.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria include the degree of proficiency required for eligibility for the position. Additionally, the degree of other skills that are significant for the subject area and tasks of the position will be considered. In the appointment of this professorship, primary importance will be given to scientific and pedagogical proficiency, with particular emphasis on scientific proficiency. The applicant must demonstrate documented broad and deep knowledge in the field of education. In the assessment of scientific and pedagogical proficiency, special emphasis will be placed on experience in research and teaching relevant to the field of education, familiarity with different traditions and methods within the subject area, as well as experience in national and international publishing with a broad focus within the educational field. The university will appoint the applicant who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and proficiency, is deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the activities.
