Postdoctoral Researcher in Rheumatology and Inflammation Research
Gothenburg University meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. 58,000 students and 6,800 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research, the focus is on inflammation and inflammatory diseases, whether caused by allergy, infection, or autoimmune disorders. The goal is to clarify the mechanisms behind inflammation. Several researchers also work as specialist physicians at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, which is a significant asset, especially for translational research.
Professor Lill Mårtensson-Bopp, an expert in B-cell immunology, and Professor/Chief Physician Inger Gjertsson have a long-standing collaboration studying the significance of different B-cell populations in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Together, they supervise 2 PhD students, 2 postdocs, a researcher, a guest researcher, a statistician, a research engineer, and MSc and BSc students. Lab meetings are held regularly, and the Division of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research has regular seminars. Infrastructure for clinical research, single-cell RNA/DNA studies, advanced flow cytometry, and advanced microscopy is established.
Subject
Rheumatology
Subject Description
RA is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting 0.5–1% of the population and can lead to disability and reduced lifespan. Our project investigates the role of memory B cells (MBCs) in the pathogenesis of RA. Recent findings indicate an unusual subtype of MBCs (CD21- Tbet+) that correlates with disease severity. Additionally, we have noted several other subpopulations, most of which have yet to be explored. This study aims to identify these subpopulations using single-cell RNA/DNA, flow cytometry, and other relevant methods to study their function by analyzing gene expression and antibody repertoires, as well as their clinical relevance. The goal is to improve the precision of RA treatment.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include handling human tissues and blood, sc-RNA and V(D)J analyses, flow cytometry, cell culture, and analyses using molecular biological and immunological methods. Data handling and analysis, compilation for publication, and application for research funding are also included. Additionally, the position involves presenting results, participating in seminars and conferences, writing manuscripts, and supervising students.
Eligibility
Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who holds a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled no later than the time the employment decision is made.
Priority should be given to those who have obtained their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who obtained their degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.
Eligibility Criteria
To be a current candidate for the position, you must have a doctoral degree in biology, molecular biology, medicine, or a closely related field, excellent knowledge of immunology, especially human B-cell immunology, a very good understanding of and documented experience in analyzing and integrating large datasets with sc-RNA and V(D)J data using various programs and analysis workflows, such as Cellranger, Seurat, Immcantation, and advanced programming in R, experience in handling and analyzing public datasets with sc-RNA/V(D)J data, knowledge of flow cytometry, and previous experience in scientific publishing. Desirable for the position are good knowledge of rheumatology and experience in programming in Python for bioinformatics analyses (e.g., pySCENIC).
You should have the ability to perform routine analyses in an immunological laboratory, documented experience in handling human blood and tissue samples, a good ability to work independently, and good collaborative skills. You should also have excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability and personal qualities such as a structured working method, collaborative ability, and a good initiative.
