The Department of Historical Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The department conducts teaching and research in the three subjects of history, archaeology, and the culture and society of antiquity. Teaching is conducted at all levels from undergraduate courses to doctoral education, and the total educational assignment currently encompasses over 730 full-year study places. Research is conducted both within the individual subjects and in larger interdisciplinary projects, where national and international collaboration is an important aspect.
The department currently has about 100 employees, including researchers, teachers, PhD students, and administrative staff. The department is centrally located in Gothenburg. The main working language at the department is Swedish.
In the field of archaeology, teaching and research are conducted on humans and societies in change, with great diversity and breadth regarding subject areas and chronology. The work is done in collaboration with the department's other subjects. The Department of Historical Studies is now seeking a qualified and motivated individual for a PhD position in archaeology.

Job Responsibilities
A PhD student conducts research and is expected to develop their own ideas and communicate scientific results both orally and in writing.
The goal of the PhD position is for the PhD student to develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research in archaeology and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the subject by producing a scientific dissertation. The PhD position in archaeology also aims for the PhD student to develop the ability to apply acquired scientific skills and knowledge in continued research work or other qualified professional work.
The PhD student is expected to actively participate in the department's seminar activities as part of their education. The PhD student is also expected to participate in the department's joint activities and conduct their research on-site.
The position is limited to four years full-time. The work is conducted full-time unless there are special reasons for a lower study pace, but at least 50%. The position may include departmental duties, such as teaching, of up to 20% of full-time distributed over the entire study period. In the case of departmental duties, the position will be extended by the corresponding time.
