Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University
The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala Academic Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several program educations, independent courses, and international master's programs within the Faculty of Medicine and the technical-nature science area. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is about 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a staff member to the Uppsala Genome Center who will participate in the laboratory work with various DNA/RNA “long-read” sequencing methods. This includes so-called Next Generation DNA sequencing (NGS) with technologies from PacBio (Revio) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (PromethION, MinION, and Flongle). The work includes arrival control and sample preparation of DNA and RNA samples for sequencing analysis. Sample preparation is mainly done manually but in some cases automated with computer-controlled pipetting robots. The work also includes handling, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the instruments used in the operations. Some computer-related tasks are included in the work, such as using MiniLims (BioTeam) for project, sample, and workflow registration. Development of functions in Microsoft Excel to facilitate documentation of sample flow, sample handling, and data compilation. Analysis and processing of NGS data may also be included in the job responsibilities.
Qualifications
Higher education in biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, or equivalent. Experience in sample preparation and instruments for DNA/RNA sequencing using NGS technologies. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with UNIX-based programs. The work involves continuously learning to handle new instruments as well as new methods and protocols for sample preparation. A requirement is the ability to independently perform the work according to assignments and to take responsibility for the work done towards the client. The applicant must have documented experience of independent work. Good ability to communicate in Swedish and English, both spoken and written, is a requirement as recurring contact and communication with the researchers we perform assignments for is an important part of the operations.
