About Ångström Advanced Battery Center

The Structural Chemistry program at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström has for many years focused on the development of materials and applications in the battery field: Ångström Advanced Battery Center. We develop new electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, improve the materials regarding battery performance, and study fundamental chemical properties in batteries using both experimental and theoretical methods. The research is thus both fundamental and applied.

COMPEL

COMPEL (Competence and excellence for the electrification of the transport system) is a strategic initiative from the Swedish government to ensure Sweden's long-term competitiveness in battery development and the electrification of the transport sector. Research and education within the platform covers the entire battery value chain and offers an interdisciplinary network for collaboration between three universities: Lund University, Chalmers University of Technology, and Uppsala University. It is within this context that COMPEL is now recruiting several young researchers with various competencies within the battery value chain, with the ambition to build a unique interdisciplinary research and education environment. This initiative is based on a strong partnership between academia and industry to drive research and development forward.

Assistant Professor

Within the COMPEL initiative, an assistant professor will be hired at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström as a research initiative regarding the solid-state chemistry of inorganic battery materials. The new assistant professor is invited to collaborate with the department's and COMPEL's researchers in an environment that supports the establishment of their own research group. The position comes with a startup package.

Job Description

Description of the subject area of the position: Solid-state chemistry constitutes a significant part of the battery research field, where inorganic materials are developed and studied for both anodes, cathodes, and solid-state electrolytes, as well as inorganic materials for a range of other battery components. Synthesis, application, and characterization of these are at the core of materials science battery research. Synthesis involves gas-phase techniques, sol-gel methods, and high-temperature manufacturing, while characterization largely involves diffraction techniques (X-ray, neutrons) and spectroscopic methods are also significant. In this context, the use of large-scale infrastructure is essential for cutting-edge research. We are now looking for a new employee with this type of expertise.

Responsibilities

• Teaching, research, and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration as well as supervision of doctoral students. The research is primarily intended to have an experimental focus.
• Follow developments in the own subject area and societal developments that are relevant to the work at the university.
• Build up an independent research group within the department by defining and planning research activities within the framework of the above-described subject area, applying for external research funding, and supervising postdoctoral researchers.
• Initiate and contribute to collaborations between research groups at Uppsala University and with other organizations and industry, and especially actively participate in and contribute to the COMPEL environment at Uppsala University and in Sweden.

Employment Period

The position as an assistant professor can be held for a maximum of six years. The position as an assistant professor aims for qualification for a teaching position for which higher requirements for eligibility are set. An assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor. If the assistant professor is deemed suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, they shall be promoted and permanently employed as an associate professor.
