Project Description

Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics encompass data integration, analysis, visualization, and data interpretation for patient stratification, discovery of biomarkers for disease risks, diagnosis, drug response, and health monitoring. Research in precision medicine is expected to utilize existing strong assets in Sweden and abroad, such as molecular data (e.g., omics), imaging techniques, electronic health and medical data, longitudinal patient and population registers, and biobanks.

Job Responsibilities

The PhD candidate will spend most of their time on their doctoral education. Other activities within the department, such as teaching and administrative work, may be included within the framework of the employment (up to 20%), whereby the position is extended to allow for four years of full-time doctoral studies.

Qualifications

Eligibility for doctoral education is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance. Basic eligibility is met by those who:

• have obtained a degree at the advanced level in computer science, image analysis and machine learning, engineering, data analysis, applied mathematics, or another related field, or
• have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
• have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The university may grant exceptions to the basic eligibility requirement for an individual applicant if there are special reasons. (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance). For specific eligibility, see the syllabus for the subject.

The specific requirements are met by having passed courses in areas relevant to image analysis and machine learning, totaling at least 90 higher education credits. Relevant courses include, for example, image processing, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks, as well as courses in Python, GPU programming, mathematical modeling, and statistics or equivalent.

We are looking for candidates with:

• A strong academic background and a solid understanding of computation and analysis;
• Knowledge of programming in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow;
• Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English;
• Creativity, precision, and a structured approach to problem-solving;
• Good collaboration skills, drive, and independence.

Desirable/meritorious

Meritorious is:

• Interest in biomedical research and experience in applying image analysis in medicine
• Experience in programming in Matlab, version control with Git, typesetting with LaTeX, and using Linux computers
• Experience with graph-based methods and graph neural networks
• Experience with explainable and interpretable AI (XAI)
