PhD Student in Electricity at Uppsala University
Electrification and digitalization are among the largest areas for transition to sustainable societies in the future.
Uppsala University (https://www.uu.se/institution/elektroteknik/) conducts successful research and education in these areas – including renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication, and wireless sensor networks, as well as research and education in Life Science, health technology, smart electronic sensors, and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international environment with about 160 employees contributing to important technical energy and health solutions at the Ångström Laboratory.
The position will be located at the Department of Electricity within the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Research Project
Plasma Pulse Geo Drilling (PPGD) is an innovative technology that uses high-voltage pulses to generate a plasma channel that fractures rock. This technology offers a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional rotary drilling, especially in hard crystalline bedrock. This PhD project aims to develop methods for generating high-voltage electrical pulses with extremely short rise times, as well as to investigate transmission between the generator and the tool.
We offer a varied and exciting job designed collaboratively by the PhD student and the research group. The PhD student will be supervised by at least two supervisors. The Department of Electrical Engineering also offers salary supplements for PhD students at the department.
Responsibilities
- Develop and study methods for generating high-voltage electrical pulses with extremely short rise times, and transmit these to the load both through modeling and through experiments with an existing pulse generator.
- Participate in project meetings and project-related activities.
- Write scientific publications and present research results orally in various contexts such as project group meetings and international conferences.
- Contribute to teaching, for example by conducting exercises or supervising labs or project work. Teaching and other departmental work constitutes a maximum of 20% of the working time.
Qualifications
- Master's degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a master's degree, in energy systems, electrical engineering, technical physics, or similar.
- Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
- We place great emphasis on your personal qualities, such as being goal- and result-oriented as well as self-driven. You should be determined, structured, and able to work effectively both individually and in a group, and also need good collaboration and communication skills.
Meritorious
- Knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.
- Experience working with digital twins and energy systems.
