PhD Candidate in 6G Ambient IoT

Electrification and digitalization are among the largest areas for transitioning to sustainable societies in the future.

The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education (https://www.uu.se/institution/elektroteknik/) in these areas – including renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication, and wireless sensor networks, as well as research and education in Life Science, health technology, smart electronic sensors, and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international environment with about 160 employees contributing to important technical energy and health solutions at the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be placed at the department of network-based embedded systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering. We offer exciting projects and a very pleasant atmosphere in an international environment.

Research Project

6G promises to revolutionize connectivity by delivering ultra-fast data speeds, nearly non-existent latency, and massive connectivity for billions of IoT devices, far surpassing the capabilities of 5G. A central component of 6G, Ambient IoT, is expected to enable a wide range of new IoT applications across various industries, driven by the ability to implement and manage billions of interconnected devices. These applications include smart cities, agricultural and environmental monitoring, smart and comprehensive healthcare, environmental sustainability through advanced waste and resource management, to name a few. Ambient IoT devices are expected to be battery-free and rely on energy harvesting while using backscatter communication to minimize energy consumption during communication. In this project, we aim to investigate both the Ambient IoT devices and the infrastructure to provide scalable IoT services.

We offer a varied and exciting job designed collaboratively by the PhD candidate and the research group. The PhD candidate will be supervised by at least two supervisors. The Department of Electrical Engineering also offers salary supplements upon employment as a PhD candidate at the department.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in 6G Ambient IoT together with supervisors and sometimes other PhD candidates and/or postdocs.

  • Responsibilities may also include teaching and other institutional tasks. Up to 20%.

Qualifications

  • You must have a master's degree or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a master's degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or computer science.
  • You must have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at the master's level including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways.
  • You must be interested in developing new solutions within the project's subject area and implementing or evaluating them, preferably on real hardware with low-level programming languages such as C.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English, as well as very good academic results.
  • Personal qualities such as high creativity, accuracy, and/or a structured approach to problem-solving.

Meritorious

  • Experience in both hardware and low-level software development.
