Do you want to work with control engineering, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? You are welcome to apply for a doctoral position at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University.
The doctoral student will be placed in the Secure Learning and Control Laboratory, an interdisciplinary research group conducting basic and applied research at the intersection of cybersecurity, control theory, and machine learning.
Job Responsibilities
The doctoral student will primarily focus on their own doctoral studies. Other duties at the department, including teaching and administrative work, may be included within the scope of the employment (max 20%). In addition, the job responsibilities include the following:
- Interdisciplinary research on security for cyber-physical systems, focusing on secure control under uncertainty and in the presence of realistic adversaries.
- Publication of scientific results in leading scientific journals and at prominent international conferences.
- Contribution to network-wide activities and implementation of (transnational) academic and/or industrial research stays within Europe.
Qualification Requirements
Basic eligibility for doctoral studies is held by those who:
- have completed an advanced level degree in electrical engineering, technical physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field, or
- have completed at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
- have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
For special eligibility, see the study plan for the subject.
In addition, the following are required:
- Very good academic results from previous higher education.
- Good knowledge of control engineering and systems theory.
- Good programming skills (e.g., in C, C++, Python, Julia, or Matlab).
- High quality of the advanced level thesis (or equivalent) or other independent written work.
- Very good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English.
- Personal qualities such as creativity, thoroughness, and/or a structured approach to problem-solving.
To be eligible as a doctoral student under MSCA (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions), you must not have obtained a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment, nor be enrolled in a doctoral program. The MSCA mobility rule means that applicants must not have been resident or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country where the host organization is located (Sweden) for more than 12 months during the three years immediately preceding the recruitment.
Desirable/Additional Qualifications
- Documented high-quality analytical ability.
- Personal qualities such as initiative, teamwork skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with both international and national project partners, as well as the ability to work both independently and in teams.
- Qualifications in one or more of the following areas are desirable: machine learning, cybersecurity, or computer systems.
Regulations for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Sections 1-7, as well as in the university's rules and guidelines.
Application
The application must include the documents listed below. The submitted materials should clearly demonstrate the applicant's qualifications in relation to the assessment criteria.
- Cover letter (maximum two pages) where the applicant describes their motivation for applying for the position and the earliest possible start date. The letter must include a section titled "Suitability for this Position," where the applicant briefly describes how their background, knowledge, and experience meet the requirements and assessment criteria.
- Curriculum vitae (CV).
- Copies of degree certificates and transcripts, including grades (with translation to English or Swedish if the original documents are in another language).
- Advanced level thesis (or a draft if the work is not yet completed) and/or another self-produced technical or scientific text demonstrating the applicant's research and analytical abilities. Applicants may also attach publications or other relevant documents.
- Contact details for two references (name, email address, and phone number). Applicants may also attach up to two recommendation letters.
About the Employment
The employment is fixed-term, according to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Section 7. The position is full-time. Start date: September 1, 2026, or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
Doctoral students employed through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Programme receive a salary in accordance with the programme's rules for doctoral students during the fellowship period (36 months). This means the gross salary (i.e., after deduction of employer contributions but including income tax) amounts to approximately 37,000 SEK per month, depending on the exchange rate (excluding any family allowance). The employee's national and local taxes will be deducted from this gross salary before the net salary is paid to the doctoral student. At the end of the project, an additional salary payment may be made if the average exchange rate during the entire project is higher than the calculated exchange rate.
During the remaining time of the studies, you will be employed under a standard doctoral contract, with a salary according to the agreed doctoral salary step plus a salary supplement of 1,800 SEK/month. Follow this link to read more about funding for doctoral students and a local collective agreement for doctoral salaries.
Information about the employment is provided by: University Lecturer André Teixeira (phone: +46 18-471 5414, email: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]))
Please submit your application by August 17, 2026, Ref: UFV-PA 2026/2342.
