Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.

Workplace Description

The Experimental Oncology research group at the Department of Translational Cancer Research, Lund University, led by Professor Kristian Pietras, is driven by the conviction that a tumor is a communicating organ consisting of several cell types that collectively develop into the deadly disease cancer. Tumors are heterogeneous and contain malignant cells with different proliferative and metastatic potential. Although it is a well-established fact that the tumor microenvironment strongly contributes to a tumor's growth and development, we know little about heterogeneity within cell types in the tumor stroma. Our strategy combines high-resolution studies of fundamental biological concepts with advanced mouse models of cancer and exclusive clinical patient material to investigate the microenvironment's role in cancer initiation, progression, and resistance to treatment.

What We Offer

Lund University is a government agency, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation time, and a favorable occupational pension. We also have a flexible working hours agreement that creates good conditions for balance between work and leisure.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The growth factor family Transforming Growth Factor (TGF)-ß consists of more than 30 members that regulate cell fate, proliferation, growth, and apoptosis in various cell types. Our studies suggest that direct targeting of the receptor ALK1 is the most effective way to therapeutically exploit TGF-ß signaling in stromal cells. Although ALK1 has historically been regarded as an endothelial cell-restricted receptor, our latest studies have also identified its expression in immunosuppressive macrophages. Inhibition of ALK1 improves the effect of immunotherapy as a result of profound changes in the immune cell landscape. In this project, we will mechanistically explore ALK1's role at the intersection of vascular biology and tumor immunity.
