Do you want to lead a technically sophisticated operation that is crucial for Chalmers' education, research, utilization, and administration?
We are looking for a secure, calm, and experienced Unit Manager for the IT Operations and Infrastructure unit at Chalmers' IT Department. Here you will have the opportunity to lead skilled employees and create good conditions for the unit's continued development in areas such as security, automation, cloud services, and modern infrastructure.
Information about the department
The IT Department at Chalmers University of Technology is a comprehensive IT organization responsible for Chalmers' shared IT systems and also provides limited IT support to the entire Chalmers Group. We have approximately 100 employees distributed across several units, working closely with operations within education, research, utilization, and administration.
The IT Department's mission is to ensure that the University has stable, secure, and appropriate IT services. We work together and build our operations on responsibility, clarity, trust, and close collaboration with Chalmers' various operations.
Description of the position
As Unit Manager for IT Operations and Infrastructure, you lead a unit with approximately 20 employees. The unit consists of experienced and technically skilled specialists responsible for central parts of Chalmers' IT infrastructure and ongoing IT operations.
The unit is responsible for, among other things:
- Server, storage, and virtualization platforms
- Network and communication infrastructure
- Identity and access management infrastructure
- Cloud platforms and hybrid infrastructure
- Technical IT security and security-related measures
- Monitoring, continuity, availability, and recovery capabilities
- Automation and efficiency improvements in operations and infrastructure
- Management of technical lifecycle and technical debt
The unit is in an important development phase. Existing technical debt needs to be managed while the unit strengthens its capabilities in areas such as IT security, NIS2, automation, and cloud services. This change needs to be implemented with respect for the operation's requirements for stability, continuity, and security.
Your most important task is to create clarity, security, and direction for the unit. You need to be able to lead change in an operation with high technical complexity and employees with deep specialist competence. You should be able to create structure and progress without micromanaging, while simultaneously building a work environment where different competencies, perspectives, and working methods are valued.
For support, you have a Senior Tech Lead with a security focus who acts as a senior technical advisor, coordinating specialist, and support in major technical, security, and incident issues. As Unit Manager, you are responsible for leadership, personnel, work environment, prioritization, economy, and operational development, while the Senior Tech Lead contributes with technical depth and coordination.
You are part of the IT Department's management group and are expected to contribute actively to the entire department's strategic and operational development.
Your main tasks:
- Lead, support, and develop the unit's employees in their daily work
- Create clear goals, priorities, roles, and working methods
- Be responsible for the unit's work environment, personnel, economy, and operational planning
- Lead change work in a calm, structured, and inclusive manner
- Ensure stable, secure, and cost-effective IT operations
- Create balance between ongoing operations, technical management, and long-term development
- Ensure that technical debt is identified, prioritized, and managed systematically
- Lead the unit's development within security, automation, cloud services, and modern infrastructure
- Ensure resource planning, staffing, and long-term competence development
- Strengthen the unit's structure for documentation, continuity, risk management, and follow-up
- Collaborate with other units, projects, administration organizations, and operational representatives
- Handle goal conflicts, dependencies, and priorities in a clear and trust-building manner
- Represent the unit in internal and external collaboration forums
