University of Gothenburg meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.
Core Facilities is an open, university-wide research infrastructure within Life Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, offering access to some of Sweden's most advanced technologies and analysis tools for research in areas such as medicine, biomedical science, and clinical studies. The infrastructure is open to all researchers – both at the University of Gothenburg and at other higher education institutions, as well as private industry in Sweden and internationally.
Bioinformatics and Data Centre (BDC) is the unit within Core Facilities with specialist competence in bioinformatics and statistics for research groups at the University of Gothenburg, as well as for development projects at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The work is primarily carried out through our SciLifeLab facility: Clinical Genomics Gothenburg. For more information about BDC and Clinical Genomics, see www.gu.se/en/core-facilities/bioinformatics-and-data-center-bdc (https://www.gu.se/en/core-facilities/bioinformatics-and-data-center-bdc).
Sweden's Precision Medicine Project, Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS, www.genomicmedicine.se (https://www.genomicmedicine.se)) is a national collaboration between Sweden's seven university hospital regions and universities with a medical faculty. Together with patient organizations, healthcare, universities, and industry, GMS is developing new diagnostics based on broad gene sequencing. Broad sequencing allows a physician to tailor treatment to the patient's individual conditions in cases such as rare diseases, cancer, and infectious diseases, adaptations that reduce suffering for the patient and save lives.
Job Description
As a Systems Engineer at BDC, you will work within the center's IT team together with developers, bioinformaticians, and other systems engineers. You will strengthen our team in the local and cloud-based operation and development of IT systems and web portals. The team is responsible for the maintenance and further development of existing computing and storage infrastructure within Core Facilities, as well as for the development and implementation of the next generation of national solutions for precision medicine through their engagement in Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS).
The national IT infrastructure for big data within GMS, the National Genomics Platform (NGP), supports a coordinated introduction of precision medicine into Swedish healthcare. It consists of three components: data storage in a secure data lake, scalable computing solutions in one or several cloud providers, and intelligent database solutions capable of handling the massive amounts of data generated by clinical genomics. Therefore, this position offers a unique opportunity for you to contribute to societal development through the introduction of precision medicine diagnostics in Sweden.
Qualifications
We are looking for you with good experience in developing and implementing new IT environments, as well as an interest in big data and helping your fellow human beings. Since we are still a small team with many and varied tasks, you need to be flexible, proactive, and ready to quickly familiarize yourself with new fields.
Requirements:
- University degree in Computer Science/IT, or three years of work experience as a back-end or full-stack developer.
- Good knowledge and experience in using Unix and Python.
Merits:
- Development work in Python-Django.
- Administration of Linux servers and HPC environments.
- Knowledge of Java and JavaScript.
- Structuring and handling of large and complex datasets.
- Maintenance and administration of services in Microsoft Azure.
- Data structuring in Apache Solr environments, Altair GridEngine, and data structuring according to medical standards such as Snomed-CT, HL7-FHIR, OpenEHR, and OMOP.
Knowledge of genomics is not required for the role, but curiosity and a desire to learn new things are essential. Since you will work closely with physicians, bioinformaticians, and biologists, you should also have good pedagogical skills and preferably experience working in interdisciplinary teams. There is some room to shape the employment according to your competencies and areas of interest. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.
Employment
The position is a permanent full-time employment (100%), located at the Bioinformatics and Data Centre (BDC), University of Gothenburg. A six-month probationary period may apply. Employment start date by agreement.
Recruitment Process
Applicants will be evaluated based on submitted documents, interviews, and references.
