The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has an international character with approximately 300 employees from over 30 different countries. The department is an integrated department with both the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as main employers. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is seeking a PhD student. The position is located at the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering, with the University of Gothenburg as the employer.

The division is a leader in research and education on complex, software-intensive systems, with strong international collaborations and close ties to the local industry. With approximately 50 researchers – including PhD students, postdocs, and teachers at all levels – we are one of the largest academic research groups in software engineering worldwide. Our core competencies include AI technology, software testing, requirements engineering, behavioral software engineering, and software engineering for the automotive industry.

Job Description

We are now seeking three PhD students in Software and AI Engineering with a focus on continuous compliance in software-intensive systems. The positions are part of a larger research collaboration between academic and industrial partners within the automotive industry, telecommunications, aerospace, industrial automation, manufacturing industry, and safety-critical systems.

The three PhD students will work on different but complementary aspects of continuous compliance.

Doctoral studies consist of four years of full-time study and lead to a doctoral degree. As part of your PhD appointment, you may have departmental teaching duties to a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed over the entire period of study, which in that case generates a corresponding extension of the study period. Departmental teaching duties usually include teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, but may also include research and administration.

Qualifications

Admission to doctoral studies at the doctoral level requires basic and, where applicable, special eligibility as established in the general syllabus for the doctoral subject.

Basic eligibility for doctoral studies at the doctoral level is held by those who:

1. have completed an advanced level degree, or

2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or

3. in other ways within or outside the country have acquired equivalent knowledge.

Assessment Criteria

Selection among applicants who meet the requirements for basic and special eligibility is based on the ability to benefit from the doctoral education. It is important to report in your application your work with dissertations and articles that you have written or co-authored. Links to relevant projects should be included where relevant.

Fluent English (both spoken and written) is a requirement. Swedish is not a requirement, but the department offers courses in Swedish.

Admission and Employment

After you have been admitted to doctoral studies, you will receive a PhD student appointment at the University of Gothenburg. Regulations for employment as a PhD student can be found in the ordinance SFS 1993:100.

The first appointment as a PhD student may last for a maximum of one year and may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

A PhD student may be employed as a PhD student for a maximum of eight years, but the total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral studies for four years.

The university applies a local agreement on salary setting for PhD students.

Form of employment: Fixed-term employment, HF 5th chapter 7§

Scope: 100% full-time

Start date: 2026-09-01 or by agreement

The doctoral education in Computer Science and Engineering requires physical presence to complete the studies. If the admitted person needs a residence permit to study in Sweden, Computer Science and Engineering has the right to revoke the admission decision if the admitted person cannot present a valid residence permit on the date of the start of studies.
