School Counselor at VBU in Ludvika/Smedjebacken
About VBU
The Västerbergslagen Education Consortium, VBU, is a municipal consortium that provides upper secondary education, adult education, vocational higher education, and commissioned training. We operate on behalf of the municipalities of Ludvika and Smedjebacken. VBU has approximately 250 employees, 1,800 students, and an annual turnover of approximately 225 million SEK. Our operations are based in Ludvika, Smedjebacken, and Grängesberg. You can find more information about our various schools on our website.
Responsibilities
As a school counselor, you work together with the school leadership and the rest of the student health team to ensure that the student health service's interventions best contribute to students achieving their goals and that students are given good conditions for health and learning. According to the Education Act, the student health service should primarily work to promote health and prevent issues. The school counselor brings psychosocial competence to the school at the individual, group, and organizational levels and works on behalf of the principal.
In this role, you work based on proven experience and evidence, providing psychosocial interventions directly aimed at groups or individual students. You work in a solution-focused manner, always looking for the positive aspects and building upon them. Duties include conducting group-focused interventions, holding individual conversations with students, performing assessments, and supervising staff in certain matters. The role also involves maintaining contact with other authorities.
You provide and receive support in profession-specific questions within your professional category in regular meetings. The three school counselors collaborate across the entire VBU, but your focus will primarily be on a few of our school units.
Qualifications and Experience
We are looking for you who are educated as a social worker and have knowledge of social services legislation and the school's governing documents. You can organize and prioritize work in an effective way that leads to results. As a person, you are proactive, curious, positive, and develop yourself by engaging with new research and collaborating with other colleagues. The job requires good teamwork skills, a holistic perspective, and flexibility. At VBU, we work based on our values, which mean that all employees create participation, security, and cooperation through openness and respect. This applies in every situation and in every relationship.
You are confident working with both small and large groups of students and staff. You find it easy to collaborate and create good working relationships. Experience working with children and young people is desirable and merit-based. Previous experience as a school counselor is highly meritorious. We also see an advantage if you have previous experience working within social services for children and young people, or previous service in child and adolescent psychiatry. Personal suitability is of great importance.
Especially Meritorious:
- Further education as a health and medical care counselor.
Experience and success in using various tools such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) or other tools that are effective in the daily work of motivating students towards better health and learning is also meritorious.
Terms of Employment
This is a permanent position, structured as a holiday service (full-time) starting October 1, 2026, or as agreed. Probationary employment applies. We require a certificate of good conduct (extract from the criminal record) upon employment. You will receive more information about our operations and the role during the recruitment process. A driver's license is required.
