Job Description

The position involves scientific and pedagogical qualification, combined with clinical service as a pharmacist, occupational therapist, midwife, biomedical analyst, physiotherapist, speech therapist, dispensing pharmacist, radiographer, hospital physicist, nurse, specialist-trained physician, ST-physician, ST-dentist, dental hygienist, dentist, or dental technician at Region Västerbotten. The position is aimed at researchers early in their careers, and the purpose is to provide an Assistant Professor with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for a position as a University Lecturer with combined employment.

Depending on your clinical profession and, where applicable, educational level, the position as an Assistant Professor involves either clinical service of up to 13 hours per week or clinical service at 50 percent of full-time as an ST-physician or ST-dentist.

At least 80 percent of the remaining time, in addition to the clinical service, must be focused on scientific qualification, and the remaining time must be focused on pedagogical qualification.

Teaching will partly take place using internet-based distance learning methods. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English. Administrative tasks may be included.

The workplace is Umeå, but work at other locations may occur.

Qualifications

Applies to all applicants: Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is someone who has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence.

To be eligible for employment, the applicant must have documented ability to lecture/teach in English. In addition, necessary language skills in Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian (according to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare's definition) are required to be eligible.

Since the position is combined with clinical service in a relevant health care profession, Swedish licensure and, where applicable, specialist certification within the profession is a requirement for employment.

For ST-physicians or ST-dentists: Since the position is combined with specialist training (ST) as a physician or dentist, Swedish medical licensure or dental licensure is required, and for dentists, two years of documented experience in general dental practice is also required.

For other applicants: Since the position is combined with clinical service in your profession, Swedish licensure as a pharmacist, occupational therapist, midwife, biomedical analyst, physiotherapist, speech therapist, physician, dispensing pharmacist, radiographer, hospital physicist, nurse, dental hygienist, dentist, and dental technician is a requirement for employment. For physicians, specialist certification in the relevant specialty is also a requirement for employment. The same applies to dentists with specialist competence.

More about the position

A plan for pedagogical and scientific development is drawn up in connection with the employment. A pedagogical mentor and two scientific mentors will be appointed to support the implementation of the plans. Promotion criteria for the position are determined in connection with the start date.

The position will organizationally belong to a department at the Faculty of Medicine. Department placement is made in consultation with you based on where your research fits best; please state your preferences for department placement in your application. The position includes a start package with funding equivalent to a doctoral student position, as well as operating funds of 100,000 SEK per year for six years.

For ST-physicians or ST-dentists:

Umeå University is the employer for the position of Assistant Professor in combination with specialist training. The clinical service as an ST-physician or ST-dentist is performed in Region Västerbotten's operations at 50 percent of full-time. The position is full-time and permanent. The Assistant Professor has the right to, upon request, be assessed for promotion to University Lecturer, which after obtaining specialist certification is combined with employment as a specialist-trained physician or dentist. The qualification period for the Assistant Professor combined with employment as an ST-physician or ST-dentist is nine years (ST-physician), eight years (ST-dentist in oral and maxillofacial surgery), or six years (other ST-dentists) from the date the position is started. The application for promotion must be submitted six months before the qualification period ends. If the Assistant Professor is not promoted after assessment, the employment is handled in accordance with current regulations regarding transition.

For those seeking a position combined with clinical service of up to 13 hours per week:

The position as an Assistant Professor is a fixed-term position, according to Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, for six years on a full-time basis. The position at Umeå University is combined with clinical service at Region Västerbotten in the applicant's basic profession, which means clinical tasks up to 13 hours per week. The Assistant Professor has the right to be assessed for promotion to University Lecturer combined with employment in their clinical profession. The application for assessment for promotion must be submitted six months before the fixed-term employment ends. If an Assistant Professor is not promoted after assessment, the fixed-term employment is terminated.
